I kind of have mixed feelings here. Tomlin is a good coach. He relates well with his players. We consistently have good teams.

But somehow I keep feeling I’m looking at a six pack that is missing the little plastic thingy that holds it all together.

    Completely disagree.

If the NFL has shown anything over the last two off-seasons it's not being afraid to fire black head coaches. And nobody gave a damn.

And if Tomlin got fired he'd be hired in no time by someone else and the Steelers wouldn't catch any flack at all.

Let's not overthink this. The Steelers are all about doing it their way and keeping HC's is a big part of that.

What did he do to mitigate it? They had a "first round grade" on Rudolph, but the offense was completely helpless without Ben.

Without Minkah being the 9th first round pick on defense, they were lost, too.

Tomlin can't coach anyone up, totally dependent on superior talent.

I like that analogy. I just think a "coach" isn't successful because he relates to his players. He needs to be able to motivate them and earn their respect, not work at getting them to play for him because he understands them. He needs to be far more than the plastic ring that keeps them together. He needs to be the cooler and the ice. He needs to be able to pack them in just right to get the most in there. And he needs to do all this in time to have them cold enough when it's time to drink.

Unfortunately, all he really does is stuff 6 cans in his pockets and hope they taste good. He keeps showing up at parties with 6 warm cans. Everyone tells him to change his approach. And he assures them that next time things will be different. Some people are happy with warm beer. Warm beer is better than no beer, right?

"Mike ALWAYS brings beer. He's more consistent than any of you. Why do you always bash him?"
"BECAUSE WE'RE TIRED OF WARM BEER!!!"
"I don't know why you all take every opportunity to bash him. Get over it."
"We'll get over it when we get cold beer."
"Well, I just told him that he's in charge of the beer for the next 3 barbecues. So just learn to love warm beer."

I could not possibly disagree more.

Personally, I am ready to move on from Tomlin.

But it is clear that Rooney feels very strongly that Tomlin is a great coach. That's why he was extended. Race / Politics had ZERO to do with this decision.

Pretty much where I’m at. Good regular season coach but his lack of playoff success and repeating theme of appearing unprepared can’t be ignored.

Cowher and Noll weren’t black last I checked, they didn’t get fired either.

Tomlin will probably go out the same way they did, on his own.

Exactly. We are stuck with Tomlin, for better or worse, until he retires.

I just hope it's for better.

Ben's been the plastic thingy. If he retires and we miss on our next QB draft pick, I think Tomlin will be in over his head unless they keep the roster jam-packed with talent elsewhere.

That's an interesting take on it but I look at it as buying a dozen eggs without the carton at the supermarket along with a weeks supply of other groceries. By the time they get home you have a mess on your hands.

Tomlin isn't a bad coach but I also have very little confidence in him getting us to a superbowl. Would love for him to prove me wrong but I have my doubts.

The biggest problem I have with Tomlin is his support team. Could be wrong, but with the exception of Arians, none of his assistant coaches/coordinators have excelled elsewhere. A coach can only be as good as the people who surround him

Not to mention the two prior years missing postseason completely and the year before getting embarrassed by the jagoffs. Tomlins last 4 years of postseason has pretty much sucked balls. But, by all means, extend the guy who is orchestrating this sh!tshow.

We knew this bullsh!t was coming but it still pisses me off to see it actually happen.

I get what you're saying but at the same time what the Steelers are doing with Tomlin is no different than what they did with Cowher and Noll. Letting them stay as long as they want. So for this situation and this franchise, race makes little difference in this case.

Ever hear of the Rooney Rule? Want to say this doesn't have to do with race again? They sure aren't bringing in women to interview, so it's not "all" minorities being pushed for interviews.

I'm not saying that trying to level the playing field for minorities is a bad thing, but it is about race. How much of a big deal is made when black head coaches face each other in the playoffs? Still not about race?

And don't think for ONE SECOND that politics don't come into play here. Ambassador to Ireland anyone?

Just because we have history of stability at the head coaching position doesn't mean that race/politics don't play into it.

And lastly, how do you KNOW that Rooney feels very strongly that Tomlin is a good coach? Are you saying that every employee is revered by their bosses?

Sometimes, you have to dance with the one you brought. And sometimes you did your Aunt a favor and took your cousin to the prom. You're stuck with her. Might as well make the most of it. You can't ditch her.

There is more in play here than an organization being stubborn and resistant to change.
