    That would be extremely foolish.

Kaboly comes out with some ridiculous statements at times. TJ will get his contract this offseason with the real money kicking in after 2021. There is absolutely no need whatsoever to do what he is suggesting.

Signing TJ this year and making this year’s salary minimal and a big bonus could save a bunch of money for 2021.

The Twitter universe (and other social media) has made traditional journalism moot. It now has become total ridicules conjecture hoping to catch enough tweets and retweets to justify their existence

Watt is signed for 2021 if negotiations stall. He will get 10 mill on the 5th year option. Hopefully they don't stall. The deal needs to get done.

This deal is going to be massive I would say north of 120 mill. So say 6 years, probably 5. Do you think he will be getting less then 10 mill in 2021? I don't. They can kick the can and backload the deal, restructure at some point. I'm sure the signing bonus is going to be at least 30 mill.

Well since they put the Fifth year option on him I don’t see how he could possibly get less than 10 million. Now if he signs a new deal they could structured in a way that his cap hit is less than 10 million for 2021

There's a difference between what he 'gets' and what he's accounting for. His contract will no doubt carry a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $30M, give or take. He'll receive that upon signing the contract, but it's accounted for evenly over the duration of the cap (e.g., $6M/year on a 5-year contract).

From there they hash out his annual base salaries, along with any workout/roster/option bonuses if they so choose to include any. These often fluctuate year to year, typically based upon where the GM thinks the team may or may not have cap room based upon other contracts.

So his signing bonus alone would pay him well over $10M next season while lessening his cap hit. The Steelers could then minimize his base salary in 2021 and inflate the subsequent years to comp the savings to the cap.

I think they are 3 million over the cap right now with the Rookies.

They still have 3 cards to play in Tuitt, Boswell, and Watt to get them under. They will probably try to hold onto the Watt card as long as possible.

If they are all in for this year they need to address the #2 CB position before the start of training camp. How long can they play chicken with the rest of the league hoping another Joe Hayden falls to them in Mid-August?

KC was on the radio last week and said he was optimistic they would get a deal done for Watt. The tone of his voice was it was a current negotiation. He did say that until the contract is signed, it’s not a done deal. Or something to that affect.

Watt will turn 27 during this season. (2021)
Franchise Tag him for age 28 (2022)
Transition Tag him for age 29 (2023)
Then decide if you want to pay a 30 year old long term money (2024+)

No thanks. Pay the man what he's worth and build around his incredible talent.

    Soo....

He is getting paid... likely this summer if I had to hazard a guess. Doing it this early in the Off Season is something the Steelers have historically seldom committed to before. Not saying TJ is not worth the money but to say they will not be doing it is silly.

It would be a total dick move. My guess is he has a verbal commitment. They tried stalling and then lowballing Hines, that went over very poorly. Can't see that happening again.

They are about 9.4 million under the cap at this point. Not sure what it’s going to take to sign the rookies.

You say 3 million over, Glenn says 9 million under, which is it? ( I prefer Glenns )

For those who keep up with the cap more than I do...

With the amount of space we have next year, would it benefit us long term to actually FRONT-load Watt's contract so there isn't such a big can to "kick down the road" later?

We currently sit right at 9.4 million under the cap. That’s not accounting for what it’s gonna take to sign our draft picks.

I believe we have 29 players under contract for next season with Ben and JuJu being two of them. I doubt Ben is back so that’s 28. I’m sure we’re going to sign Watt and that’s going to cost us. We have the draft class from this year and next to add to that list, but we are still going to need to sign a lot of players. I think the cap space that appears to be available right now is somewhat of a mirage. It’s going to get eaten up quickly.
