I have read this board for many years but just joined a week or two ago.

And, oh by the way, everyone knows that Tomlin retired and nobody cares that you don't like the discussions about how bad he was for the franchise. So you can quit posting that he retired.

But 19 seasons of winning records isn't very leather. Remember the Bungles going through an era (1991-2002) where The Bengals did not have a winning season. Several 3-13 and even a 2-14 during that stretch.
That seems Lethal.

I would agree, we should have probably milked a Super Bowl or two appearances.
But the New York Jets are going on 15 years without a playoff appearance.
That seem lethal.

Buffalo lost 4 consecutive Super Bowls. It was an incredible feat to get to 4 consecutive, no one has done that.
But they lost all 4.
That felt lethal.

Then there is bad ownership, Dan Snyder. He was lethal.

Lethal has a definition of: Extremely harmful; devastating.
Winning records isn't devastating nor extremely harmful.

So what did this guys actually do?
The Steelers are a winning team by the record, so what can they do better and are they stunted?
Changes in management sometimes take a season or two. Mike McCarthy is as of yet untested as a Steeler head coach.
It remains to be seen if he can add a few ingredients to the already winning Steeler team and elevate it to the next level.

Not sure the previous was lethal but he sure was not able to elevate this team to the next level.

How about Canada, and I was the 1st on here to say Canada sucked, and got flak from it, and people can go back , and look, yet Who knew Canada the longest, and the most?? Rooney did, and yet after the Rooneys made Tomlin keep Lebeau, fired Arians, hired Haley, fired Haley. We know for a fact these things happen, so with all your infinite wisdom with the Rooneys doing all that, how can You straight faced say Tomlin did all the hiring of his coaches??

Not sure what you were attempting to ask here but it's irrelevant!

Lot's of guesswork, no real facts. You, nor I, will probably never know who was the driving force behind all the good coaches under Tomlin, and who was the driving force behind the bums that later coached under him. But there are a few things that are plain and simple fact, the longer Tomlin was there, the worse the staff became.

Noll was a great coach. Particularly for that era.

I assume that he would have also been successful in the current era. But the relative power of coaches vs. players is so much different now than it was then. And the cap means that there's no way we'd be able to keep that 70s team together like we did then. So I think it's very hard to compare coaches pre- and post- UFA+Cap.

None of that is a knock on Noll. Easily the Steelers GOAT HC. Arguably the GOAT overall. Although it seems like he never gets mentioned here. Just like how Bradshaw never gets a mention for GOAT QB.

 

Noll was a great HC, but those Steelers scouts like Bill Nunn deserve a lot of credit too.
