When you make the afc title game so often,like it was the case under Cowher(6 times in 15 years),this is more likely you will caught that lightning at some point

The steelers in that era was not the cowboys in the 1990s but it was still a great team(2004 to 2010)

We need a good young QB before we can be competitive again IMO.

I've been all for a rebuild for a while now. But Rooney hasn't yet allowed me to sit in on strategy meetings for the team (which is probably better for all of us ).

 

I believe Kordell Stewart could have been a star in the current NFL!

 

Yeah,27-4 for the steelers including the playoffs in 2004 and 2005 with Roethlisberger

Even the great Bill Parcells had a down year after winning the super bowl in 1986.They had only 6 wins in 1987 after winning in 1986

I agree with all of that except for one piece. A bad game plan by the coaching staff can negate every bit of talent on the field.

Tomlin was famous for bad game plans.

Neither does Cowher for that matter.

 

Very few coaches belong in the same class as Noll.

Particularly guys in the cap/UFA era.

While I don't like him, this is what made Bill B so impressive in NE. A Reid in KC too (although he wasn't nearly as good in PHI when he didn't have Mahomes). Because you aren't really supposed to be able to have those kind of dynasties the way the league is currently structured.

But (like all of this conversation), I think those modern day dynasties are way more about having the best QB in the generation playing for much less than their market value. And in KC's case, by making the most of an elite QB on a rookie deal (and the cheap early years of the 2nd deal). It's the biggest advantage possible in the NFL...probably in all of pro sports.

 

Noll inherited the worst team in the NFL in 1969. Steelers were so bad, Mean Joe Greene didn't want to play for them. This has been well documented.

Cowher inherited an average team that had some good players to build around in Greg Lloyd, Rod Woodson, Dermotti Dawson, Carnell Lake, etc. Steelers eventually became an AFC Elite team starting in 1994 through 1997.

Tomlin inherited a complete roster of an elite team that made 2 AFC Championships and winning a Super Bowl 2 years before he was hired.

There is no freakin' comparison in the teams that these 3 coaches inherited.

 

I ain't even gonna get into the QBs... that Noll, Cowher and Tomlin inherited. OK.. maybe I will.

Who the hell was the Steelers QB in 1969 before Bradshaw was drafted in 1970?

Cowher had Bubby Brister and Neil O'Donnell to work with... not horrible, but nothing great.

Tomlin had Ben Roethlisberger. A QB who already had a Lombardi trophy in his trophy case.

 

Chuck Noll had Dick Shiner as his QB in 1969. Shiner went 1-7 before being replaced by rookie Terry Hanratty who promptly went 0-6.

 

And take a look at the coaches he fired and the coaches he hired.

He let go of solid coaches in Mike Munchak, Bruce Arians, Dick LeBeau, Todd Haley; all coaches that have credibility in the league.
He hired Randy Fichtner, Mike Sullivan, Matt Canada, Arthur Smith, Keith Butler, Teryl Austin; all coaches who have little or no credibility.

 

True in 3 cases!

Winning 4 super bowl with the steelers in the 1970s would be as if a head coach would be able to win 4 super bowl with the browns in the next 10 years!...The steelers were that bad in Pre Noll era
