The lethal combination of Tomlin and Rooney

Never skied or have any knowledge of it. Is it an expensive sport??? Is the equipment expensive?? I know my golfing cost a bundle. In my prime I paid 1500 for a set of irons. Add in woods, the bag, etc. etc. well over 2.5 grand. And the cost to play is BS. Prime time is over 100.00 for one round of golf.

 

Skiing is my current, most expensive hobby. Golf is about as expensive if you add the gear, green fees, cart fees, etc. Costs of skiing can be reduced by acquiring your own gear instead of renting for the day. Boots start at $250 and can go much higher. I recently bought a new pair of Salomon boots with BOA technology, $420. New skis can cost anywhere from $450 to $2K. My most expensive skis are $920... bought in 2021, post-pandemic. Poles are anywhere from $50-$100. That's not even counting clothing... helmet, jacket, pants, base layers, gloves, goggles. Food and gas to get there. But... once you have all your gear, only the lift ticket is required... but lift tickets are outrageous, even at mom-and-pop ski resorts. My hometown resort charged $48 for an all day lift ticket, 16 years ago in 2010. Now, it's $90.... pretty much doubled.

 

Golf is crazy expensive if you have high level equipment, I have a $500 driver shaft and I just bought a $500 putter and they are worth it! If you know exactly what you are looking for you can find it used on Ebay and save a lot of money. Western Pa. is not noted for good public golf courses and believe it or not, if you play a lot, a low-end country club is the way to go.

 

The last time I skied a great resort was at Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, I think the tickets were $75, but when I went there in the late 90's, it was worth every penny! This is their current price list. In Canada, there is no out of bounds, you can ski wherever you want and WB makes Vail and Aspen look like a bunny hill.

 

Whistler is a pipe dream for me. That's olympic, world-class level skiing. My favorite resort I can actually get to is Snowshoe in WV. It's massive compared to my hometown resort.... but probably a bunny hill compared to Vail and Aspen.

 

I learned to skit at Killington Vermont and I ran into some people who told me that once I skied out west I would never want to ski in the east again. I thought they were nuts, how could you not want to ski! They were right, it's totally different. You can ski for an hour without having to take a lift, the snow is dry so it is much slower meaning you can ski a much steeper grade without getting out of control ..... and the biggest difference is you will never ski on ice. Skiing in two feet of fresh, light as air, powder is a blast ..... until you fall ... it's really difficult to get up when there is nothing to push against to lift your weight. Utah was by far the best I skiied in the US.

 

For some reason I couldn't add this photo to my previous post? I took this at WB. The sky is so dark up there it's almost black. You can see the top of the lift dead center in the pic, then it was about a 1/2 mile ski and 15 minute hike to get to the peak where I took this.
