    :lolol:

Couldn't have said it better. I just don't know what I am supposed the be getting on Lake for. People like to say that a good coach will make marginal players better and Lake has done that, so is it just the fact that he hasn't polished all the turds then? I think the bigger argument should be why can't we scout DB's better. And thats not Lakes job.

the stats were put there because BF said he stunk when he left here basicly, i was showing he's been pretty consistant here and there. so rant all you want with your memory of gay but he was never brought here to be the starter then or now. there are also other parts to the game than interceptions. especially in DL's defenses. gay has been a good find then and now, not just since lakes been coaching him. you can say all you want about him in arizona and how bad he was, but yet the steelers brought him back. are you saying we brought back a bad player? hmmmm, interesting thought snack. i guess we should be talking about KC then instead of lake. thank God we have lake because of the junk KC keeps bringing in here.

ideally we should have 2 good cbs on the outside and gay in the nickel
and a ballhawk free safety in the middle

    IDEALLY ........

Don't put words in my mouth Mac, I said his play dropped off, and it did, don't care what your stats show, there were several reports that he was struggling there and his being cut a year after signing his contract tends to back that up, it was't purely a cap move. Believe what you want, Lake has been good for Gays career.

What in the HELL are you talking about?? I don't know where to start with this. You're often reasonable mac, but sometimes you're like a brick wall that lost its reading glasses.

Fun discussion. Where Gay is concerned, I think the right answer is somewhere between the positions I'm reading. In Gay's first stint here, he was a pretty solid nickel guy. Things went awry when he was made a starter. He was awful on the outside trying to handle #1 and #2 WRs. People also got on him about the Peterson pancake, but that was one frickin play. He was otherwise a decent tackler for a 5'10", 190 lb. DB. I always thought that some fans unfairly used Gay as a whipping boy for our pass defense, because as a starter on the outside he was really playing out of position. Now, I didn't pay any attention to him in Arizona, so I can't comment on how he was there. However, in his second go around here in Pittsburgh I see him as a somewhat better version of what he was before he left. He's a good nickel guy (like he was then), and a bit better as a starter, but still not a guy that you want out there full time. Did Lake help him? Probably a bit, but I don't see Gay as proof of Lake's coaching prowess. I do however see McCain and Blake as solid evidence that Lake is at least doing something right.

I guess my glasses are neither rose colored or poo colored. I guess they must just be black and gold colored.

well if he wasn't very good except for early and he got worse in Arizona, what else would that make him but basicly stink? gay is a nickel corner and that's what we brought him here to do, not start. as I said he's been our deshea townsend 2.0. he's been steady eddie his whole career. not spectacular but not too bad either. vets tend to get better the more they see and gay is in that prime spot of his career to be playing better. all I know is we stink in our secondary and if you guys are happy with where we are good for you, but I'm not. we may as well of not signed ben because at this point we will never contend with our defensive backfield the way it is or has been the last few years. lakes doing or not it's a mess. nobody is to blame and we will leave it at that. speaking of talking to walls. I'm done with this.

thank you elvis, pretty well put I'd say.

Elvis' glasses are foggy, dont listen to him.

Now you are going to make me quote Llyod, damn you, but thats a strawmans argument if I ever heard one :lolol:

No one ever said we are "happy" with where the secondary is, just that Lake has gotten more out of guys then other coaches could. Really that simple, don't know how that is even debatable. I'm happy we have him because I'm really not sure they make the playoffs last year without the play of McCain, Blake and Gay. People like to put forth the criteria that a good coach gets more out of marginal players, now we have a coach that meets that criteria and excuses get made to diminish his success

This board can be a fun place :smiley1:

At this point guys it is all speculation and conjecture since Lake really hasn't been given the talent to have a stellar defensive backfield nor do we know how different Butler will run his coverages behind his front seven. To further muddy the waters Tomlin is going to be more hands on with the defense than he has in the past. One of the first big indicators we had was free agency and while kicking the tires on some middle of the road talent they didn't make a splash. The next indicator and I think it will be huge will be the draft and if they go the way many of you think then we will have our answer. Lake will have top flight talent to work with and possibly have some restrictions lessened. So we will see what sinks and what floats.

I know Cortez was "hurt", but I think it was a mistake for the Coaching staff to bench him and then IR him. It probably did more harm to his mindset than good.

They should have let him play through it. On some of those deep balls he gave up he was close to making a play if his technique was better.

    That's not a DB, that's a nose tackle. You can't fool me.
