Again, I hear what you're saying and I think Marino was great, but most teams wouldn't throw the ball 40 times a game if he played today. The Dolphins built a team to try to take advantage of defenses that weren't set up to defend their elite speed, aggressive style, and wide-open vertical passing attack. Once the league adjusted, his numbers were still great but came back closer to his other contemporaries. In Marino's first four seasons he had insane numbers. After that, they had a couple good seasons, but the overall record of the Dolphins isn't that great.

Once again he was a great quarterback, but their scheme had him throwing the ball all over the field. Some of his numbers are specific to playing in that system with elite weapons and great pass protection with little defense being played. I have no doubt that he would do very well in today's game. He didn't move well, but his arm talent would translate to any era. It's just that he may not have been in a wide-open offense like he was with the Dolphins playing in warm weather. Never discount playing in warm weather as well.

If Marino played in cold weather with a defensive-minded coach, who knows what his numbers would look like, but he may have won more. I think the Dolphins made a mistake with the way they constructed the team. They needed to be more balanced on both sides of the ball but were never able to do that because they were always chasing what they saw those first couple years.

Could you imagine him playing for the Steelers?
Steelers and Marino might have won a couple of Superbowls together!

You do know he played in cold weather at Pitt?
I think he might’ve succeeded much better as a Steeler
But then again would we have had the same game plan as Miami for Marino?
A lot of ifs and buts
    Like candy and nuts

    You were spot on
    Good read

You're right he did play in cold weather, but he wasn't playing against NFL defenses at Pitt.

I hate some of these discussions because it sounds like I'm knocking Marino. I'm not. I am just trying to put some of his numbers in context. As I said in an earlier post, I would have killed to have him as the Steelers quarterback and I nearly cried when they didn't draft him. I get pissed off every single time I think about it.

Yeah, I agree with you and Pczach on that. Cowhers 90’s teams had it all but the QB.

And who knows, maybe Noll could have added to his collection, people groan about the 80’s but they had better talent than they get credited for.

Then tell me how could a guy have the most yards, and most TDs by any Qb that year, and they couldn't win?? It's not a individual award for Qbs like you people like to think . If a Qb is winning double digit wins, I don't care who they are , their team is helping to do that. Burrow clearly showed this 70% completion, over 40 tds, 9 ints, and over 5000 yards overall, and yet they didn't win enough games so he wasn't even mentioned in the MVP race let alone voted. Why because his team wasn't good enough. That clearly shows its not a individual award, or he would have won as a individual.

LoL. No totally different style, but You get my point though. They are both loved by basically what they did only in the regular season.

There is no freaking way Marino would have the same stats in Pittsburgh. We played a more balanced game, but Marino was at fault for that in Miami. I'm not saying he didn't want to win, but he wanted to win his way. There is a reason his not 1st ,but 2nd HOF HC , and he knocked heads. I still remember the argument on the sidelines with Him, and J. Johnson because he would change out of running plays.
