garvin is our smallest LB at 220lbs. as one NFL ex player said and I said yesterday, the kickers wear a bare minimum of equipment and that is on the NFL itself. the player said a facemask should extend down below your chin line that is what it's for to protect the jaw. they make this equipment for a reason. the block was text book as any block should be , its exactly how it's taught from day one of playing football. if they don't want kickers hit they should not be allowed to pursue the play and they should have to run off the field after the kick. BS,BS,BS!!!!!!! I've about had about enough of this NFL and football. they have ruined the game.

Garvin was known to lay some big hits when he was at WV as well.

And he didn't even put that much into the hit, basically the punter ran into a brick wall.

That's a textbook tackle even in the pro's (face mask into chest, not chin). Problem is in the NFL if the crown of the helmet goes near the head and neck and the player is considered "defenseless" which a punter is 100% of the time, then it's against the rules. Come on, it's not that hard to see people, right wrong or otherwise those rules are specifically spelled out in the rule book for 2013.

IMO he's going to be fined, no doubt about that. I liked the hit, but I hate to see a guy injured, and it could have been much worse. Not sure it was necessary considering it was the punter, but Gavin probably wasn't thinking about that. It will be interesting to hear the NFL's take on it.

He can recover from a broken jaw, I suppose. But if Garvin went low and took out his knees, his career would be over.

Here is the real question, who will the Bengals bring in to replace him? Because the guy we have now is terrible. If they bring in somebody better, I'll have to scratch my head at Colbert and Co.

I thought it was an illegal hit when it happened and couldn't believe a flag wasn't thrown. No doubt he'll be fined for it.

And he could have also hit him in the midsection with his shoulder.

Gotta disagree with you on that one. Both of Garvin's feet were off the ground after he made contact and he was moving forward. It wasn't like he just got in Huber's way.

He could have laid into him a lot more, a lot more. Had he done that, I think that's when you would have seen a flag.

Just because he could have hit him harder doesn't mean he didn't hit him hard. ;)

The Bengals just signed Shawn Powell who played for Buffalo last year. He had a tryout in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago when they opted for Mat McBriar.

    You know what?

He did his job and made sure he didn't have a play on Brown. He missed his mark and ended up putting his helmet on the punters chin. Yes, he meant to lay a lick on him. No, he probably wasn't thinking "I'm going to break this guys jaw with my helmet".

If he had just stood there given the size and weight of the two bodies, he'd probably have been pushed into Browns path. (No one knows, but it's possible) Had he tried to just push him away and failed, everyone on here would be calling him out for screwing up the return. Had he tried and gotten a holding call because he put his hands on him it would be even worse!

In short he nailed him and messed up at the same time. He'll get a fine and move on.

    Tomlin on the block:

“What he is coached to do, and what transpired on that play are two different things,” said Tomlin, who said punters are protected in a similar fashion that quarterbacks, receivers and others are. “From a structure of a call standpoint the position that he was in to be a final blocker is what he is coached to do. The nature in which the block unfolded is not what we are looking for, not what we coach and not what he wants. That play hit pretty quickly, was right back up the field at him, and it transpired the way it transpired.”

Yeah, he did his job... but not within the rules. I'm not saying he should have stood there and possibly been pushed back into Brown's path but I just can't see how anyone could say that it was a clean hit according to the rules. If that happened to one of our players, some people on this board would want the guy that hit him tarred, feathered, drawn and quartered... and then thrown under the jail.

There is a happy medium between breaking his jaw and "trying to push him".

Come on, it was a love tap :lolol:

I thought it was a clean hit, I honestly don't know what is legal and isn't anymore, all I know is I loved that hit and was it good to see some old fashioned football dealt out by the Steelers.

    Love hurts, huh? :lolol:

I love hard hitting just as much as the next guy (when I played I was a little sick... I loved getting hit hard and then jumping back up and hooting and hollering, even if I was seeing Tweetie Bird flying around my head) but there was no doubt in my mind it was illegal. I was shocked that no flag was thrown.

That's really the only issue I have. I have a gut feeling that if he had just put his hands out and he somehow tripped and fell, they would have called a holding on the play. They tend to call that based on the games I've seen. He was just caught in no-mans land as far as rules go and decided to be the one delivering.

I don't think he got caught in any-mans land... he could have and should have stuck his shoulder right into Huber's midsection and would have accomplished his goal of removing him from the play.

I started a whole different thread on this...I can't believe anyone would say that what Garvin did was dirty or wrong. I guess what Garvin needed to do was stop, look at the player's number, and then ascertain: "Uh oh, this is the kicker. I better take it easy."

It was NOT a blind side hit. This was not a peelback.

I had better stop. This has me riled up. The NFL is taking more steps to lose me as a fan...forever.
