It's weird to me we'd rather have some JAX castoff than Starks... but it's a depth signing so whatever... and it has to be a vet minimum just about, because we had less than a mil in cap room.

I just saw a stat where Whimper was ranked 74th in pass protection of offensive tackles. ugh

Anyways....just another depth signing...no guarantees he even makes the team. Probably more of these types of moves to come...

I don't think this is what the signing says. The signing says we have ZERO vets on the roster at the tackle position...period. We need someone who has in the past played the game at this level. I still think Starks is an option, but I think we need to remember that Starks wants to start.

again our new O-line coach brings a player in he knew prior. this team takes giant leaps forward with young players and then backpeddles with has been players. i'd rather have any tackle but max though.

    foster still looks fat.

gilbert doesn't look much thinner and maybe the ankle isn't responding very well, once he got active on it.

i will say it sure looks like DD put some muscle on in the offseason.

colbert shouldn't be allowed to pick linemen. take it off his job description. definately not his strong suite. after rd. 1 he's suspect, and for FA's, also not good.

Exactly. I think there will be more warm camp bodies signed. Plus we really can't afford anyone with our cap situation. At least not until 2 June.

I see it a little differently. Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin have said all off-season that 8-8 is unacceptable and it would be ridiculous to bring in the same players from an 8-8 team and expect different results. I believe that the Steelers are determined to move on from some of the veterans (Harrison, Hampton, Starks) that have been around for so long. They feel it's time to turn over a new leaf and they are determined to sink or swim with the young guys and a different veteran mix.

Either that or the FO is just confused about the sack number. I hope they realize that for a LB, 12.5 sacks is a good thing but for an OL, 12.5 sacks is a bad thing. :hmmm:

don't forget , whimper isn't exactly going against joe thomas here either. he can run block pretty well. we really don't know how gilberts ankle will hold up yet either. if we are going to run the ball this year, and thats looks to me like what they are going to do, then whimper is a far better run blocker then max.

i figure we are going to let the run slow down the pass rush and also set up our passing game. at least until this young line, gets up to snuff. if they give the young guys a chance to play under fire.

it may not be A-1 right off the bat, but we have to quit throwing away our young talent and develop our younger talent. if whimper has an ounce of gumption to workout, it's 3/4 of an ounce more then max. it looks like some of these guys are working this offseason. DD has put on some muscle. (check him out on the photos on the steelers home page). i hope it trickles down and they follow our 1st rd. pick. it will make a difference.

smarter, stronger, younger, quicker, with a better work ethic, will make for a good line.
