So ESPN has some formula they use to rank the sports franchises. They have the Steelers 12th.
Not sure of the formula they use, considering the Phoenix Coyotes are in the top 10, and they're the biggest joke in hockey.

However, for those that wish to see it.

    No. 1 for sure......!!

I just saw a guy driving around here in Naples, FL with a fully decked out Mustang in full black and gold......Steeler logos everywhere.............and .......this surely happens throughout the Country with the Steeler fans, not so much other sports teams.

What a bogus and biased article. They couch their conclusions in made-up statistics that actually make it seem like their conclusion makes sense.

I highly doubt it's biased. I doubt they have a bias towards Phoenix Coyotes lol.
It's just the criteria they used.

this is not a list of all time great franchises. its based on the last 3 years and has a very small % to do with winning. being #12 out of 122 franchises isnt to bad considering what they are ranking.

the New York Giants won the super bowl last year and they are 48th and Pats are 22nd. tha Packers, Saints and Ravens are the only NFL teams ahead of them.

Looks like the Steelers lost points on affordability (can't argue with that, but I have no idea how the other teams on that list compare), fan relations (anyone from the old message board can't argue with that -- just kidding, I'm sure there's more to it in person but I have no idea since I'm not there), and stadium experience.

I don't know how they did so badly on stadium experience, because Heinz looks pretty damn awesome to me, and it's only 11 years old, and the location and view of/from it is amazing. Most stadiums are out in the middle of nowhere in some field or lot.

Regardless of the criteria used, in order to keep baseball teams anywhere near the top of the list, they have to have some bias. Perhaps a few teams sell out all the time, but many teams don't. I saw a little bit of the O's game against Toronto last week and I swear there were more people at the Atlantic League's York Revolution game with people just hoping to see Roger Clemons.

Most NFL teams sell out their stadiums. Some, have blackouts in order to make it happen. Where as many baseball teams don't sell out all year long. Not sure how Basketball teams do, because I don't watch them.

Based on that, I would have to say that its possible the cost of the ticket and the quality of the game are directly proportional. If it is truly supply vs demand than the more expensive tickets should be the ones that their team wins more often. It's possible this is not the case. I just can't see how most NFL teams didn't rank near the top and most baseball teams rank near the bottom.

Besides, the Boston Red Sox were ranked near the bottom. Does anybody really believe that the Boston faithful, given that they've won the World Series twice over the last decade, are even in the same league as the St Louis Rams or some other team that are so far from winning seasons that don't even expect to win?

    What an odd ranking system.

I'm not going to go all-out crazy about it - it's worth a discussion, I guess, and if someone wants to say we're 12th best, hell, that's better than 13th - but the way they've done the points is just a little strange.

For example, am I reading it right that "Title Track: Championships already won or expected in the lifetime of current fans." has us on 7 and the Ravens on 25? Am I missing something here?

I believe the lower the points, the better. I think they are rankings. The team at the top has low numbers across the board. Also, we have a 4 for ownership.

They come out with this list every year, based on the same categories, and their rankings within each category are 100% subjective. "Stadium Experience" is the one that gets me. How do you evaluate that? The Pirates rank #3 in stadium experience. The Steelers rank #30. Green Bay is #1. I don't get it.

I had the priviledge of going to Heinz Field a couple years ago, thought it was awesome, if that get's a 30 ranking, I have to visit these other stadiums.
