The Steelers have exercised the fifth year option for David DeCastro's contract according to NFL Network. The 5th year option for DeCastro is $8,070,000.

Yeah he's a pretty obvious one to not pull a Cortez Allen. Lock him up long term, along with Cam Heyward.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would have expected a LT deal for a guard would come in below $8M dollars. This seems like a head scratcher to me.

Just strange that we cut ties with arguably one of the best guards in Steelers history, Faneca, over less money than DeCastro is making..... with much less of an impressive resume. guess that happens with the increase revenues and caps over the years.

That was 7 years ago. The cap in 2008 was $116M. Since then it is up nearly 25%.

Plus, as Freak says, Faneca was nearing the end of his career. Plus by all accounts he was becoming something of a locker room cancer. A shame to see one of the all-time greats go like that.

Also I agree with Freak that Fanneca wasn't what he once was when they let him go. I liked him a lot but they just weren't gonna pay as much as he was wanting and he seemed pretty cantankerous and set in his ways about what he wanted and wasn't willing to budge. They really didn't have a choice but to let him go.

Yep but no matter what he still opened probably the greatest running lane in Super Bowl history for Fast Willie and set up the longest rushing play in Super Bowl history.

Big Red was one of the best OL in Steeler history.
Lets hope DD turns out like Faneca.

This is nothing more than the 1st step in locking him up long term. This time next year he will be seeing more than 8 million, but it will be dollars that get spread out for cap purposes.

Good move. They will lock him up next season when the 5th year option kicks in. Time to take care of Cam Heyward.

And Faneca's attitude was pissing of the brass. He did not go out as a class act.

we are probably the only team in the league that their right guard makes 4 times their LT. I like DD and all but whoa, that's a lot of money for him.

yea I get that part but it's still crazy for us to pay that much for a RG. the tackles money pushes those high, but we are not talking a pro bowl guard here or tackle. this is a guy that has put in a couple of years and seems to be getting better, not an all- pro by any means. a right guard to boot. probably the easiest position to fill on offense. the league should really break these positions down more for the 5th year option at different positions. that really straps teams by doing this. it's not much different than heywards money if we don't come to a contract agreement. that's a lot of dough.

LOL! :lolol: Tell my boss about that luxurious cost of living increase.

I would say it's market driven supply and demand but it sure a heck isn't a cost of living adjustment.:roflmao:

His salary will be lowered once they sign him to a longterm deal, just like they will with Heyward.

The cards just signed free agent guard Iupati to a 45 million 5 year deal, thats 9 mill a year over all with pro rated guarantee, look at mike pouncey becoming the highest paid center in the league at over 50 million, yeah, Oline has become a high paying job, so decastro has a big payday coming at least in the 45 mill range, market value is pretty high these days....
