I don't get the low tender on McLendon, they are supposedly very high on him and he was to replace Casey, this is a big gamble. Maybe they think Ta'amu will fill the void but that's also a gamble, he still has legal trouble to resolve.

Don't they have a right to counter offer if a team tries to swoop a player up? Maybe they are trying to gamble to not have to overpay for these guys?

I wouldn't want' to lose Sanders or Mclendon at all. Most of all Sanders because that puts more pressure to draft another WR early. I think Mclendon can do the job, but I wouldn't be shocked if Steelers surprised everyone and draft a NT early.

They do but I don't have a lot of faith that they can outbid anyone. I don't see how they can afford to lose Sanders either, they already have to draft 1 WR.

I think we're ironclad secure with Sanders. Looking at the receiver depth in this draft, I don't see anyone signing Sanders to a free agent contract (which would likely be quite a bit more expensive than a 3rd round rookie contract) AND give us a 3rd rounder. I am concerned about McClendon, and that's about it.

i agree i didn't remember sanders was a 3rd pick i thought was a 5th , yes no way somebody will give us a 3rd with all the wr around , i'm worried about mc lendon too expecially with some team in the conference that has cap room (browns and bengals) that know the player better and would like to give us a problem

I'm not saying McLendon won't be good, but I just don't get what the big deal is.

Maybe now we finally get the answer as to why Mclendon didn't get much playing time last year. They were stashing him so there was no film on how good he can be. They are taking a chance with the low tender.

I hope you're right. I always got excited when he came on to the field because I wanted to see what he could do. He played with more intensity than anyone as far as I'm concerned. I know during the gameday threads there were always a few of us that always loved to see him take the field so I am not alone in my sentiment.

Because right now he's the only one we have that we know can play the position well. We don't know what we have in Ta'amu or when he will even be available so that leaves bringing Hampton back at 35 or moving Ziggy to NT or spending a draft pic we wouldn't have other wise used at that position. And quite frankly, McLendon is good.

I get that he's the only NT we have that's ready to play, but we're talking about a guy who couldn't beat out Hampton who a lot of people here say is done. I've seen a post or two proclaming McLendon a probowler already. I just don't see it yet.

i saw on the steelers depot site that ta'amu was in the dead money section with guys that are no longer here like the newly released harrison and rainey. did we get rid of him at some point we are unaware of?

where does fangupo fit? he was a decent NT coming out. now one thing they will consider is fang and mclendon can play some DE in our system too.

Yes, in November. They released him and signed him back to the practice squad. Releasing him created $324,984 in dead money for 2013, from the remainder of his signing bonus.

I don't think it amtters we gave McClendon a low tender. Nobody outside Pittsburgh knows who he is, so I can't see anyone offering him more than the 1 mil per season, that we could always match.

I'm a little surprised that Redman was tendered. I just don't see what he gives you that Dwyer cannot. Seems pointless to keep both.

And it looks like Dwyer didn't waste any time.,..

    Per Schefter:

"An upset of today: Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer signed his sixth-round tender for $1.323 million. Didn't want to wait. Wanted to prove point."

heck yea thats a nice payday for him. redman too. they are solid backs. so is batch. so is will j.. add a guy in the draft and an udfa to the mix and we could be ok. we need some speed added. this only keeps them one year though.

Kind of confusing, but I think he's referring to the fact that it was a surprise that Dwyer signed before exploring other options.
