Did you not see Baby Gronk take that hit from Davis and hold onto the ball!!!!! He is a proven great TE which is better than a unknown 5th rd draft pick!!!

It’s very obvious !!! Tomlin saw that on tape ( since he never sees things during the game) and begged Colbert to make the move since Tomlins seat is hot and Colbert is on one year prove it deals!!!!

Don't like this one bit, especially if McDonald's injury is not serious.

A 13 game rental backup TE? Really? That's not worth a fifth round pick, imo, when a) you're already draft pick depleted, b) you've lost your HoF QB for the season, and c) you probably won't make the playoffs much less be a legitimate SB contender.

This trade stinks. It's a desperation move by a desperate team trying to hang on to some semblance of relevancy for no good reason.

I do like it and here’s why...

The Steelers liked Vannet coming out of college...... they spent time with him. He is a proven solid blocker.... something we don’t have and desperately need to help bolster our run game. He has very good soft hands making him a nice target in the passing game or blocker in pass protection which we also need.

We have up a 5th..... he was a 3rd rd pick and is a Proven NFL caliber TE. Grimble on the other hand is not!!! Poor blocker and bad hands..... Grimble is also on his final year of his contract which pays him 2nil this year.... if he’s cut post June 1 there is no cap hit or dead money .... just a 2mil $ saving...( minus the 375k he’s been paid so far ) ......

I seriously doubt Vannet is a one year rental and the team will most assuredly want to sign him long term...

    Cajun

Edit: just checked, Vannet has around 730k left on his contract.... signing him and cutting Grimble would upgrade the roster and improve our cap charges for this year..... we could actually sign Vannett to an extension now if we desired to do so...... stay tuned folks!!

Jesse James was a 5th rounder. Got four years out of him.
Jaylen Samuels was a 5th rounder. Thread on this board where people are clamoring for him to play
Zach Gentry was a 5th rounder.

There's a few others that were on the squad as ST players a few years. All of that is more value that a 13 game rental backup TE.

I played along, but the whole "we can't draft anyway so why does it matter" argument is awful. Draft picks are valuable assets. Even if you don't use it, you can trade them. For example let's say there's someone in the middle of the third the Steelers really like. That fifth could have been combined with the compensatory third to get that player. You don't throw them away like they're loose change. I hate using the Patriots as an example, but that's a franchise that accumulates draft picks then wheels and deals them on draft day, because they recognize the inherent value in them. The Steelers FO is not doing that right now. They'll have very little draft day flexibility. Put it this way, if you liked the Dobbs deal, then its pretty hard to like this deal.

I can't remember who I heard on 93.7 "the fan" maybe it was Ron Cook say that Colbert has a job waiting for him in Carolina any time he wants it.

You want to sign Vannett long term? What makes you think he would want to sign anything long-term at this point instead of hitting the open market after the season. But let's say he would if the deal was a Jesse James-like deal. James received a four year $22M contract with $7.1M signing bonus and $10.4M guaranteed. Using that as a benchmark that would probably mean cutting McDonald who is slated to make $5.5M next year.

And you paid a fifth round draft pick for the privilege of doing that while you could have just waited until the off season to give him an offer. Oh yeah. Totally worth it. (sarcasm on.)

OK, I thought Steelers picked up a TE Alize Mack on the practice squad. So we have McDonald, Vannett, Grimble, Mack and Gentry. McDonald is out... so who gets a hat vs. Bengals?

    Confused I am.

Do they really think they have the horses to make a run for division? I sure the hell don't and our future seems to be getting darker.

Art II isn't going to let a GM give away the store just because he may be in his last year.

Can’t really argue with what you’re saying but it took them this long to realize Grimble was a bum? That’s a concern.

I agree most 5th rounders have little impact, but I see little value here in trading for a guy who could walk after 13 games. Yes we need a TE, most available are long in the tooth or worse than what we have, but w/o a first next year and hoping for an awarded 3rd compensatory pick that 5th has a lot of value on draft day. It could be used to move up in the 2nd or 3rd, or other combinations in the draft. This kind of move is great if he is the guy (even as a b/u) that will provide depth as you move toward a championship. The Steelers are not that team, while it fills a hole temporarily, long term has little value.

Good move and I hope we keep him. I thought grimble would give us more but I was wrong. I like the two we got and liked them at draft time too.

Ben has limited time. Mason is going to keep getting better. They do feel like we can take this division and with nix out we need to bolster our run game. TEs are very good for a young qb and we are fixing two problems with this move and covering our butt with the mack move.

We just upgraded the TE room for this year and next. Gives gentry and mack a year under Daniels. Hopefully we can sign vannett.

We have added some need on both sides of the ball with a first and a fifth. We have basically drafted a TE too for next year.

Our TE room looks better then it has in years. The qbs will be happy, the run game will be happy. Now let's go win some games. The players seem ready to and have not lost faith. We will have money next year with a few moves.

Do you think these trades may indicate that Colbert see's the writing on the wall and is plugging current holes in exchange for a future he will not be part of after he retires/resigns?
