Should probably throw Katula's name in there, too.

2010 everest's first year we were:

last in the league in punt ret. average
    13th in kick ret. avg.

18th in punt ret. avg. allowed
5th in KO ret. avg allowed

i believe we had a punt blocked that year and harrison sailed one over the punters head.

    2011:

    13th in punt ret. avg.
    8th KO ret.avg.

12th in punt ret. avg. allowed
16th in KO ret. avg. allowed

i thought we did better than this but those are the numbers.

going by the article decastro and lee were the culprits that got leaped over. anybody have a replay to see?

either way these are not good numbers. we can do better.[/quote:22ff3cbl]
It was Lee and DeCastro. Also the LS Katula, although I guess he gets a partial pass because he was snapping. But I wasn't in that argument.

The first thing I'd say is, I think we've seen several great examples over the years that prove the punt returner, not the punt blocking, is by far the biggest factor in that number. Randle El just didn't have it anymore, and they were too damn stubborn to give it to Brown. Hence the enormous leap in 2011. I've always assumed it was Tomlin's decision to go with El and Moore over the guys who produce big returns. But maybe it was Everest.

The second thing I'd say is, to me personally good kick and punt returns are damn near bonuses. Yes, if the numbers aren't good enough a change could be made. But if I'm the head coach, I'm looking for a special teams coach who will give me a good coverage team. No big returns, no touchdowns, and a high ranking in the yards. That is where we sucked horribly pre-Everest, and he got us to an acceptable level. Keep in mind I'm not saying that the firing was a bad idea (although it does sound like it was not entirely based on performance). For all I know the new guy will take us to even better places. But Everest at least appeared to help our special teams, considering what it was like before. Do you remember all the TDs, man?

oh yea, i remember. it wasen't pretty. like someone said we may never know all the details, but we need some upgraded play all around on ST's. jones has outlasted them both, so he's seen both evils. if we keep gilreath and rainey, we should have two superb return men. that should help. i hope anyway, i just hated to lose because of ST's.

I have an inside source that told me that Tomlin was having a coaches meeting and told Everest to get the coffee. When Everest returned Coach Haley found a bar of soap in his coffee cup and Coach D told Haley to eat the bar of soap. Haley wouldn't do it so Coach T grabbed it and took a bite. Well, it all went down hill from there!
