Wow! I just got a text saying the Steelers fired their Special Teams coordinator. I have never heard of them firing a coach this close to the season. Wonder what's going on.

The timing is just what gets me. I know it's not THAT big of a job. I had already forgotten who it was and who the replacement was by the time I made this post, so I know it's not a major change. I wonder if he did something to tick off Tomlin or something.

Replaced by the current assistant special teams coordinator so I have to wonder if we'll really see a big difference.

I'm thinking there has to be a non-football-related reason for doing this now.

two guys jumped over two of our linemen to partially block a game winning FG. yes it is a big deal. it's a very important part of the game. our coverage units have not been very good this year. our assistant ST coach amos jones has been here since MT became HC. he has outlasted two ST coordinators, and has now been promoted.

I have a feeling that this is partially a non-football issue as well.
Al Everest has been in the league for more than a cup of coffee.
It'll be interesting to see what if anything comes out later.

Tomlin's quote simply stated that the Steelers were going in a different direction. Everest was friend from the same position by the 49ers in 2010.

Its being reported locally it must be a personality conflict?

I'm definitely leaning non-football related the more I think about it. Coordinators don't get fired two games into preseason for lack of performance in games that don't count. I don't think that he got fired for difference of philosophy either. If that were the case how did he land the job in the first place?
Nope, definitely a personal conflict with a high ranking member of the organization IMO.

i do think it's preformance based. the two guys jumping over our two rookies might have been the final straw. that had the game on the line and i'm sure MT didn't like that at all. it's not up to the standard. everest lost his job in SF for the same reason. his hire was a head scratcher from the start to me. good move too, i think. we have to be better on ST's.

Agree with you here. If it were purely performance related, it would have happened in the off-season. They're not going to make the "last straw" a play that involves players who will be greeting folks at Walmart in a couple of weeks. I agree that we're probably better off, and that ST play has to improve, but saying, "That's it, he has to go," after the scrubs botch a last minute field goal just doesn't make sense.

did you read the article? one of those scrubs was our starting RG and first round draft pick. the coverage this preseason has been very iffy so far and i'll also say most of these guys playing ST's right now will be playing ST's in games for us. if it was something else, i would think that would have been done in the offseason to allow time to interview some other canidates and amos jones.

One of the perps was kyle jolly who doesn't fit either of these distinctions. I'm 99% certain the other guy was Lee. DeCastro was not one of them.

    It was NOT one thing.

It was Coach T seeing his friend Amos mature to a point he is able to do the job on his own.
Amos will be hungry hoping to climb the coaching ranks and with the handcuffs (everette) gone he's now the one in charge.
Coach E intially improved our STs but it seems that improvement has plateaued.
This year's preseason performance so far is disappointing and its time to get peoples attention now with a reality check.
Then there's the personality conflict thing which is always possible, especially when as a 16 yr coaching vet your boss is a youngster, barley twice as old as his NFL coaching yrs.

I'm sure the preseason performance hasn't helped, and it probably makes it a hair easier on Tomlin, but our ST has turned 180 degrees since he got here. We were truly horrible and then became pretty good. I think the last two regular seasons should outweigh a bad FG and some crappy punt coverage. Especially since it's mostly not the right players out on the field. Shoot, if it was really all about that, shouldn't we be factoring in Ivy's blocked punt as well?

Yeah, I was going to post in the first thread, about us firing him, but it must be a page back, or merged into this one.
I just read two stories, one in the Gazette, and one in the Tribune, which pointed out that our special teams actually IMPROVED considerably in the last 2 years, since his hire.
I could post links, but the stories are simple to find, if you go to those sites.
Basically, we weren`t that bad the last couple years, which, in itself is an improvement from what we were before him.
I do believe they said we didn`t allow a single kickoff/punt return for a td last year, and we basically ranked no lower than 13th, and up to 9th, in most signifigant kickoff/punt rankings.
They both also said that it had nothing to do with the decision to remove A. Brown from his return duties.
The fired coach, and Tomlin both took the high road, and refused to discuss details, but it certainly seems there was a behind the scenes problem, that we will probably never know the details of.
That`s fine with me. I like that we don`t air our dirty laundry in public, but it sure leaves me scratching my head, as to what happened.
Most definitely does NOT seem performance related, even given these 2 preseason games...
    GO STEELERS!!!

2010 everest's first year we were:

last in the league in punt ret. average
    13th in kick ret. avg.

18th in punt ret. avg. allowed
5th in KO ret. avg allowed

i believe we had a punt blocked that year and harrison sailed one over the punters head.

    2011:

    13th in punt ret. avg.
    8th KO ret.avg.

12th in punt ret. avg. allowed
16th in KO ret. avg. allowed

i thought we did better than this but those are the numbers.

going by the article decastro and lee were the culprits that got leaped over. anybody have a replay to see?

either way these are not good numbers. we can do better.

He improved the special teams and has been here a couple years now.

Basing this on performance doesn't really make sense.

From my experience following this team, when special teams stink it is usually because you 2nd and 3rd stringers really aren't that good. Lack of quality depth might be a big issue this year... but to blame soley on lack of talent on a coach doesn't seem right.

Exactly...they improved...but some aspects were still ranked in the lower half of the league so they could be better.
