...which is exactly what we've all been saying. "The ruling on the field" is just lawyer speak for "we went with our initial gut reaction and we were wrong but since you can't 1,000% see his knee and the ball at the same time on replay we are going to let it 'stand'". There are multiple phrases they use. The other phrase they use is "confirmed". Which means they saw something as plain as day on film. The one thing about that article that is annoying though is that it said that the game "hinged" on that one play. No. It didn't. It ACTUALLY "hinged" on the fact that DWill ran with passion. It ACTUALLY "hinged" on the fact that Ben was able to get it together long enough to make some great throws to put us in position to win. It ACTUALLY "hinged" on the fact that the young guns like James(no pun intended) and Grimble were able to step up and make big catches when it counted. It ACTUALLY "hinged" on the fact that Jordan Berry kept them pinned deep for the vast majority of the game. It ACTUALLY "hinges" on the fact that for the most part our d came to play and shut those guys down and most of Dalton's yards were just garbage yards accumulated by throwing underneath all day. How about his red zone production??? Are ALL of these things lost on people when analyzing this game?! Wow.

What's always been funny to me is that after every single game, fans of both teams will say the refs were against them all game and clearly favoured the other team. Many on this site think the league is against the Steelers and the refs screw us most weeks. You go to other teams message forums and they say the exact same thing about their teams. The Bengals fans think the refs screwed them, not just due to the fumble, but due to several missed holding calls, the missed TD, etc. Steelers fans point to missed holding calls against us, PI calls, H2H, etc.

That's why complaining about the refs drives me crazy. The refs make mistakes every week and will until the end of time. It's the human element o the game. The refs can only call what they see and they will miss numerous holding calls and depending on angles, PI can be tough as well. The refs aren't against any team and missed calls benefit both teams most weeks.

The same thing happens in baseball. They've instituted replay and they still miss things. There's just no way for people to be perfect.

Remember that time in the playoffs last year when Joey Porter was on the field? That was fun.

I couldnt tell you if it was a fumble or not, Harrisons body angle blocked the view but JHs knee contacted the ball first before boyds knee was down, but Steeler hater dan fouts was advocating it wasnt a fumble before the refs even looked at it, at any rate they needed 8 points to get into over time, doubt they could have got the 8 points....

I thought it would have been overturned upon review, but Ben has taken so many shots that were never called that I'm just chalking that up to karma leveling things out :lolol:

I agree. Ref inconsistency is part of the game.

The one exception to this, which still gets me mad, is the overruled Polamalu int against the colts in 05.

Uh, really!!! What game were you watching? No PI for Brown in the end zone or on the Steelers last drive. We got called for a horse collar but I remember Williams getting tackled from behind by I think Jones where he clearly grabbed hold of Williams' neck from behind...think it was in the 4th!

after watching Blandino's video I have a question about the play
he catches the ball then goes down with no contact
so if Harrison's knee hits the ball before he contacts the receiver is that a fumble or down by contact?
because until Harrison gets there he can certainly get back up

I liked Dan Fouts when he was playing, and liked him in The Waterboy. But I'm much less fond of him as an announcer. On that play, he immediately praised the no-call and said Brown's body wasn't turned ... even as the replay showed AB's body being turned.

:to keep order: <--- get this blind guy a cane, please!

Yeah Brown's an enigma for a WR.

Normally a star receiver gets those calls. He tends not to get those. It started last year and looks like his little stunt in training camp has started to take root this year with the refs. Him acting a fool about it isn't going to help him get those going forward. He's got to just get up and jog back or it's going to be a tough year for him.

Officials get graded on their performance, so I can't see them making non calls that will hurt their own interests just because Brown jawed at an official in preseason.

    They just sucked Sunday.

i believe the rule is down by contact either way. the ball is part of the runner.

From what I have seen the NFL officials always side with maintaining the call on the field even if it is reasonable to overturn (but not clear and obvious). Seems like college is more likely to go with what likely happened with some inferences made

Most of the time they throw the flag based on instinct when PI happens. Unless they see it blatantly. Many times it comes out a bit late on the "close" calls. You see it all the time the guy get's up and starts complaining while the crowd is screaming like crazy, then the flag comes out.

I'm just saying on those "close" calls he isn't getting that benefit of the doubt. I'd bet that those types of plays that are subtle are ones that don't get graded as harshly. Since they are harder to spot.

I'm just saying that if you get a rep for being a jackass, it gets held against you. Look at Suh, he gets no benefit of a doubt!

It's the old Micheal Jordan thing and sometimes it happens in reverse.

That's all I'm speculating about. I mean how does he not get the call with the LB in the endzone?

I didn't want this to be its own thread and thought maybe it fit here as well as anywhere else.

Notice the contact, notice the ref....and no flag was thrown.

The officiating across the board was below the line this weekend. Some teams over came and won, some teams didn't and lost

The Bengals Fumble was not even in the top 5 travesties this weekend IMO

Number 1 was probably Terrell Pryor getting flagged for taunting by throw the ball to a ref who was not looking and bouncing off a Ravens shoulder pad.

I disagree that it was "obviously" not a fumble.
"Obviously" would be if the ball could be seen as his knee was down.

The receiver was transferring a wet football from two hands (during the catch and the two step "football move") to his right forearm. In the two videos I've seen, the ball is obscured after he makes that transfer. (His left arm is visible.) While unlikely, he could have been fumbling before the contact by Harrison, given the slick conditions and him moving the ball. Those videos weren't enough to overturn the call on the field.

With Harrison charging with a full head of steam, I'm surprised that the receiver didn't try to roll slightly on the way down, use his back as a shield and keep both hands on the football, instead of what he did (use his left arm to catch his fall and hold out the ball in the arm closer to Harrison).
