I like this pick. His frame will allow 10-15 lbs of muscle added on. I can't help but feel that we're going to see a little hybrid 4-3 this season. This pick as well as the Timmons, Ziggy and Heyward picks in recent year's would allow it.

Agreed here - sort of. They've already said that he's expected to provide his biggest contribution at special teams. He's developmental, but obviously they see promise in him.

I was thinking the same thing it really feels like we are building a pittsburgh 2 defense. Sorry I refuse to call it the tampa 2 since this was what we ran in the 70s. Timmons would make a killer mlb in the pgh 2. Mclenedon and hood on the inside kiesel and heyward on the outside. Not saying this is what is happening but it ismuch better against the pass then the 3-4

One draft report noted that Spence, "is already a coach on the field -- something teams may note for the future -- and shows amazing recognition skills that result from intense film analysis." I was kidding earlier but I guess I should hold criticism till we see him on the field. Some people laughed out loud when they saw how skinny Lambert was.

Sean Spence will only play special teams in 2012

So we used a 3rd pick for a undersized lb who won't get on the field. Keith Butler told him no rookie lb's starts for the Steelers I guess they know what they're doing. I wanted a nosetackle in the 3rd.

we used a first on timmons and he took 3 years. woodley sat most of his first year as a 2nd rounder.

There's no shame in a top-notch team drafting a developmental player in the 3rd round! You're not going to get immediate starters out of every pick - AND - I personally think the Steelers were lucky to get two!

Zach Thomas was undersized middle linebacker, he did pretty well. Give the guy a chance, I've seen many normal sized linebackers that weren't worth a darn.

Yeah bell came in and started righ away won rookie of the year then the steelers asked him to read offenses and not just blitz and attack and he couldn't do it I'm all for a guy sitting for awhile and actually learning the nfl way

I'm still unsure on this pick tbh. He's kind of undersized and will most likely play as an OLB. He has good speed but I just don't know what they have in store for this pick. I really thought a DT was coming with this pick tbh.

he's just an inch short compared to most. it's not like he's 5-3. we have a similar guy here now too. rolle. maybe we are going to unvail a new package. spence can play make no mistake about that. lambert was only about 220-225 i think he did ok here.

Isn't that sometimes the point? Confuse your opponents. It would be real easy for other teams if we just did the same thing over and over again. From everything I've read he has great instincts.

I didn't read all the comments, but I could tell people were wondering where he would play. Everything I read about him before the draft said he's only a 4-3 OLB and can't convert to the inside. He has added weight, and if there's anyone we should trust about linebackers it's the Steelers, right? So maybe he can convert. He certainly has some good things about him. Everyone seems to agree he's smart and instinctive. That can go a long way for a linebacker.

But if you're looking for something radical, what about the idea that he could be a pass defending linebacker specialist? Similar to what Lawrence Timmons did in 2008. That year, Foote came off on passing downs and Timmons went in, and it made a world of difference. Maybe they're trying to replicate that. If he never becomes a full time player, but holds down that role plus stands out on special teams, that could be worth a 3rd round pick, couldn't it? Like a good nickel back or third WR, a part time player can be extremely effective. If he never starts but is very good at that role, I won't complain.

The guy looks great. I wasn't able to watch him in person this year when Miami played Maryland (he was suspended), but I assume his absence contributed greatly to our ability to run it against them

OK, this kid is reeking havoc all over the field. Larry Foote wish he was that good. This kid is gonna be a player! The only thing I see is that he is a little small which, makes me believe that he can play a little safety down in the box. I'm gonna have to agree with PWP on that matter. He looks real good, he makes plays, and can run. Foote was never that good.

Now that they drafted a NT, I hope they get this kid on the field!

He's only 1 5/8" to 2 5/8" shorter than the other LBs...I think he will be fine.

Forget the combine crap, this guy is a player ON THE FIELD! It looks like he gives it up every play - 100% effort guy. I'm looking forward to seeing what this guy can do.

No problem with the Spence pick at this time.....Had they taken Ta'amu in the 3rd and Spence in the 4th...I would not have said a word.....so I will not say one now.

you all are going to like spence. i watch miami alot. the kid can play. he's not a thumper, but a playmaker. more of a chad brown LB, then a earl holmes guy. i'm extremly happy with this pick. don't count out golden the UDFA as a new safety either. not spence though, he's all LB.

Spence was one of Mayock's favorite players in the entire draft. I admit, that I was so lukewarm over the Adams & Spence picks on Friday because I wanted Ta'Amu so bad. Now that we have the big NT, these picks look better to me.

I see Spence as a nickel LB. He'll come in on 3rd down and run with the TE. He will get to see some action this year, no doubt about it. I think he plays alot stronger, and more importantly - alot faster than his measurables might dictate. This guy could turn into a playmaker in our defense.

I have a buddy who played safety for "the U" a while back, so he stays pretty zoned in on their program. He told me that Spence is really good, and he's usually pretty critical, so that's high praise coming from him. I am warming up to the pick. Just like NB said, I wanted Ta'Amu in the 3rd, so that impacted my view of the Spence pick. I still think he needs serious strength training to ever work his way in as a starter, but I love his instincts and aggressiveness.
