I think the playoff format should be changed to allow only teams with winning records in. If a division champ has a losing record, I think a wildcard playoff spot should go to a team from another division who has a better record, unless there is not another winning record team missing the playoffs. So instead of 4 division champs and 2 wildcard spots, it should have been 3 division champs and 3 wildcard spots. In my scenario, this year's NFC playoff spot would have worked as follows:

Carolina Panthers: 7-8-1 >> Division Champ (losing record) - Since all teams in the division had a losing record, a wild card spot would be awarded to the Philadelphia Eagles. Leaving the NFC South without a playoff representative.

Philadelphia Eagles: 10-6 - Should have been awarded a wild card spot.
    San Francisco 49ers: 8-8
