    the steelers
are good when they play good
    but
are bad when they are playing bad

when they are playing good,it usually means a win
    and
when they are playing bad, it usually means a loss
that being said about good play and bad play mean a win or a loss
but not necessarily means a good win or a bad loss or bad win and good loss

Steelers D still sucks at 3rd and long. How many times have teams had 3rd and 11+ to go.... and convert this season? I'd rather it be 3rd and 2 than 3rd and long.

Well Real Steel, I can't argue with you on this one. If we can fix that 3rd and long or whatever and long our D would actually be good. I notice that trend too

We also rank 10th in points allowed. If there's one defensive stat category that I am most interested in, it's PPG allowed. Red zone defense is a HUGE contributor to our PPG performance, much more so than yards per game (ranked 19th) or 3rd down performance (which is also around the middle of the league).

Our defense is not great. We all know that. It's still being built, and there's a deficit of talent and/or depth at some key positions. However, the focus is where it needs to be - holding your opponent to as few points as possible. It doesn't always work out that way, but we're better at it than 2/3 of the teams on the league.

I prefer a defense that doesnt allow teams to get in the redzone, the rats will field goal us to death if we give up the redzone.....

    check this list out. http://www.oddsshark.com/nfl/defensive-stats

Our defense is on the field on average 30.10 minutes. Out of those top 10 defense ppg only Seattle, Denver, KC, NY Giants hold the ball on defense longer. Our defense is actually ok, our offense is what is very underwhelming. We are ranked 14 in ppg with 24. Bryant really screwed us over on that one. Maybe Green will be the savior.

Agree completely. I have been trying to say that our offense is under achieving all year.

To me it shows we have poor DB play .The shorter field makes up for their lack of talent...If they could play that way on the entire field they could dominate, but they simply are short on talent on the back end...

lack of pass rush. look at cowboys, 5th in ppg(TOP helps) but they do same thing cause they cant sack the qb

You see the Vikes style....They made Dak pull the ball down and come off the 1st. read and because of that they got heat ...The DL needs some time to get to the QB..Look what the Steelers did to a QB who could not make a quick read .. We need more skill at CB and we need a Collins type of Safety, Ben and our OC are singing praises to Collins and watching lots of tape and devising ways to fool him or keep the ball away from him...Teams spend zero time worried about the Steelers Safeties making a play on the ball..That affords the QB and the WR more comfort than they should have...

I think our defense is starting to improve lately under Butler in the last few games anyways. Hopefully, it's not just because the competition has been somewhat weaker and they are starting to see positive result from the schemes they have been running. They didn't blitz at all during the first half of the season but now all of sudden they are back at it.

Our 3rd and long still stinks though.

At any rate, Red zone defense has been stout all year. Can't argue that.

We just need to start putting up the 30 points a game they been striving after for a long time and we'll be alright. That is yet to be seen though.

Being bad when it comes to yards and 3rd down success rate and good when it comes to PPG and Red Zone Defense are truly worlds apart.

As it stands, Pittsburgh can fix their yardage and 3rd down rates. Something like PPG and RZD is not easy. Such success should be contributed to the defenses ability to clamp down when it matters most. In addition, this is what separates Pittsburgh from other teams in the conference.

Sure, Denver has the best defense in the conference and Baltimore's is very difficult to stop, but I would rather limit opportunities for the opponent to score or negate them entirely than have some glorified bragging rights such as pass yards/rush yards given up, etc., etc. Other stats though like sacks and turnover are important, so that would be the only areas Pittsburgh should focus on. Once those are addressed, the rest of the defense can improve on its own merits.

This is due in part to Butler cranking up the heat thanks to Artie and Sean's development. The game has slowed down for them to such a point that Butler now can blitz every now and then as opposed to blitz seldom a quarter at a time.

This just confirms for me that Butler was trying to protect Burns and Davis. People will say, well it didn't work but thats nonsense. Who's to say they wouldn't have lost even more games. Also, don't forget, with the exception of the Philly game, it was working pretty well until injuries set in.

I said in the beginning of the season it would take Burns and Davis half the year to get up to speed.

Hopefully we'll see the pressure continue now.

yup i remember seeing you say that. Now if we continue to get pressure on Giants I'll believe we are for real. Giants are tied 2nd in allowed sacks(with us) with 14. Lets see

We are 13th in the league 3rd down conversion rate against... it's not as big of a problem as many think. It's just that 1 out of 3 conversion stand outt... and the 2 out of 3 stops don't.

seriously though, if you are like 3rd and 20, and allow conversions... you are just not good.

Well... it happens to the Steelers just about every time. I don't know what the hell happens on third and long... but mediocre offenses have no trouble getting a 1st down. It's insane. It's a combination of bad angles, poor tackling and missed coverage in the middle of the field. Almost all of 3rd and long conversions vs. Steelers D are short passes in between the hashes that go for big gains and RAC yards.
