For those of us of a certain age, you might remember Walt as an outstanding guard for the Chargers in the 60s and early 70s. I watched him play live when I was growing up and he was a beast. I didn't meet him until way after his playing days were over. He was a really nice guy but had addiction problems, the worst of which was his dependence on painkillers that the Charger doctors got him hooked on. A lot of his problems he brought on himself but the painkillers were the direct result of team doctors. The NFL wouldn't help him so he successfully sued the NFL and was awarded over a million dollars only to have the award overturned on appeal. He was only 71. Great player, nice guy, not so good business man, deserved better treatment from the league and, especially, the Chargers.
