So in theory let me ask this question. If there is a turnover or scoring play the rule is now those are automatically reviewed. And I guess after today we all learned of this idiotic rule where if a coach of the team that has the negative result of the call on the field still throws the challenge flag, the refs feelings are hurt and that is a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty vs that coaches team and that then makes the play unreviewable and the call on the field stands.

What is to stop this from happening? There is a turnover or scoring play and after the first replay it is obvious that it is going to be overturned because the call on the field is wrong. Can the coach of the team that is benefitting from the incorrect call on the field then throw a challenge flag of their own, eat the 15 yard penalty on the next play, but then that stops the review from being able to continue and the call on the field would still stand?

This was incredibly stupid. I don't know how someone can defend it, because the rule contradicts itself.

If a review is automatic on a scoring play, then it is needs to be automatic. They can still punish a team 15 yards for throwing a challenge flag "illegally" and maintain the automatic review.

I'm not sure they would cancel the review if the other (scoring) team threw the challenge flag.

When I was a kid there were a couple of books containing "Strange But True" football stories. If they still wrote those books, this game would go into it.

I can remember the Steelers benefiting from a Bengals loss once that came about from another (since changed) stupid rule interpretation. A Bengals DB had picked off a pass against the Jets, and his momentum carried him into the end zone. When he turned and tried to run out, a Jets player tackled him, and a safety was called.
They changed it after that, and they will change this one after this.

Easily the worst rule in football. It's unbelievable that a group of people got together and actually decided to implement this rule.

I agree if its automatically reviewed then u review it regardless....... Could the coach had said oops I dropped it and I don't want to challenge it.... Seems like I've seen coaches throw the red flag and then pick it up because it wasn't reviewable before?

I bet we see that happen this year with one of the more creative coaches. Then the league office will immediately amend the rule because someone is taking advantage of it.

I knew about that rule guys. Last year or earlier this year a coach was called for it. Once he challenged a non challenging play. The flag and play are dead and he/the team can not benefit from a challenge flag thrown in goofyness, Couldn't think of a word there
