So far this thread is within the boundaries of our political rules. If bashing starts, it'll get locked faster than you can blink. ;)

Discussing if a team should change their name due to the name being a slur is ok, I think.

Personally, I think the Yankees should change their name. Not very many people nowadays know that the term "Yankee" is an insult. (I'm being slightly facetious. Yes, "Yankee" is meant to be insulting. but this country a long time ago adopted the term anyway, made it ours, reveled in it and said to England, "LOL, what else you got?")

Damn Yankees! Says a northern born, Southern hearted boy!...
Wasn`t that the name of a band with Ted Nugent, the guy from Night Ranger, and a couple others?
Oh, and then there`s that baseball team, that just buys out all the competition...
LOL! What were we talking about, again?
    Injuns?
Are they what makes cars go?
Ok, sorry, I`ll quit now... bye bye...

You know what else is a slur? This is a good one too. If a bunch of people get arrested they say send the "patty wagon" to pick them up. Well the reason they call it that is because back in the day when Irishmen came to NY they would get drunk and still be there after "last call" so the bar would put them out on the streets but they were too drunk to even walk home and would pass out on the street and so the cops made a wagon to go and pick them up and let them sleep it off. Hence the term "patty wagon". I also know how "redneck" started too if anyone would be interested. I'm a virtual vault of useless information. I can also tell you how the term "lobbyist" was started which is probably my favorite story about slurs.

So far, I've stayed out of this. As much as I dislike Snyder, I have to give him props for not bending on this issue. Dollars to donuts it's not "Indians" who are offended by the term. It's the folks from places like S.F., Berkeley, Hollywood, etc. who sit around just looking for something to be offended by. As far as "us" slaughtering Indians and stealing their land, unless you're 200 years old or so, you didn't have anything to do with it. If you want to see real abuse of a native people, look to your "friendly neighbor to the south." Mexico continues to treat their native population as 3rd class citizens while here, in San Diego, members of some of the gaming tribes get $10,000/month for doing nothing more than being born into that tribe. With that kind of dough, you could call me any name you want!

Well maybe because one is a politician and our president and the other owns a football team but other then that I can see why you are confused. Brilliant!

I'm a Yankee and love the Yankees! So don't go causing trouble honky! By the way, they were originally called The Highlanders, which I thought was pretty cool.

Oh ok, I wasn't there so perfectly fine my people slaughtered innocent men, women and children, heck, now I can be proud about that piece of our history  And I'll take your bet in a heartbeat, like I said, go walk onto a reservation and call them a redskin.

You don't hear a lot from Native Americans on the issue because frankly they are a minority so small (Why? because we decimated their population) and for years no one cared to listen to them. You can't say for a fact Native Americans don't care. What if the Redskins were called the Blackskins? Tell me what the difference is? Would you tell african americans to just forget slavery?

And the bottom line is Snyder and NFL is not going to change it because they think will lose money. They don't have the balls to stand up and do the right thing all for a little more cash in their pockets.

Fans would get over it, I was a huge St John's Redman fan back when Chris Mullen, Walter Berry, Mark Jackson, Bill Wennington and others were on the team and Lou Carnesecca was coaching them and they had to change their name to the Red Storm because of opposition to their name. I didn't like it but it didn't stop me from following them. They changed it around 94', that's how long this type of stuff has been going on, probably even before that, so no, it's not some S.F., Berkley and Hollywood folk who think it should be changed, it's not a new fight.

But like you said, he won't change it.

    Nerd alert:

This always annoys me. MacLeod was The Highlander because he was from the Highlands of Scotland. Not because he was immortal. Being a Highlander didn't make you immortal.

Now I'll hike up my pants, reinstall my pocket protector and go study some Klingon. Carry on. :roflmao:

Dang, I was going to post something funny in Klingon to help with your studies, but when I checked the translation, it ended up with a completely different meaning when translated back to english. Good thing.

Yeah I'm not real concerned with "offending" people that just walk around with a chip on their shoulder just waiting to be offended. The actual people that signed the petition to Snyder out of 10 of them a few can't even vote on the floor of the house and are actually delegates from places OUTSIDE the US. So yeah, their opinion is HIGHLY esteemed by me and probably you too... LOL!:cry:

blount, I respect your opinion and you seem like an awesome guy, but this is something that might be worth thinking about for you.

I don't want this to be a political thing, so please let's not go all Bush/Obama (besides, TTF will rightly have to shut it down if we do), and I am about to say not-so-nice stuff about both sides. The first person I always think about when someone brings up "the PC police" or complains about political correctness is Sarah Palin. She seemed to hate political correctness in all forms, and wasn't afraid to talk about it on a variety of subjects.

But then Obama made a definitely non-PC joke about how his bowling was like something out of the Special Olympics, and Palin took offense to that because she has a mentally challenged son. Now, she has every reason to take offense to that and be upset. It makes perfect sense to me and I don't blame her for feeling that way, or asking for an apology, or whatever. Obama was only trying to make fun of himself at the time, but what he basically said in his joke was, "Retarded people are really, really terrible at bowling, and that's funny."

To me, "Politically Correct" means sensitivity about something you don't care about. Because it's easy to say, "Great, thanks to those PC jerks, I can't even say 'Special Olympics' or 'retarded' (or wetback, redskin, pollock, midget, etc.) anymore." And it's also easy to say, "Great, thanks to those PC jerks, I have to say 'Happy Holidays' instead of 'Merry Christmas' now." I don't personally care about either issue. I've said "retarded" more times than I can count (although I'm trying not to anymore), and I don't care about the signs that say Happy Holidays. I didn't care when they said Merry Christmas, either.

The person saying those words may not mean anything by it (believable in some cases, less believable in others), but the point is that regardless of what you meant, it's extremely offensive anyway to the person you're talking about. Especially if you're talking about a large group of people, like an entire race, or gender, or whatever. In Obama's case, it was Palin and many in the mentally challenged community. Now, you might find plenty of mentally challenged people that thought it was hilarious. And you might find Native Americans that don't mind the term Redskin. Probably especially if they're football fans. But there's no denying that this is an offensive term at least on par with the other ones I mentioned (I've read from African Americans and Native Americans that it's essentially the Native American version of "the N word"). The only real difference between redskin and wetback is that we continue to use Redskin, so it just doesn't seem so bad. We're used to it.

Now, I'm not saying it's impossible for political correctness to go too far (I think you should change your handle, blountforcetrauma, because it's insensitive to anyone that's ever had trauma in their lives, as well as anyone who has an irrational fear of blunt objects). But I find that most times people complain about PC, the topic is indeed something that has a group of legitimately offended people behind it. I don't think you can make the case that Native Americans don't have the right to be upset by this name. And I don't understand either of the following arguments: "Oh come on, it's not that offensive" (because that's not really our call; that would be like Obama telling the mentally challenged community they shouldn't be offended) or "I don't care if it's offensive" (because that's just stupid). The fact that the team has been called the Redskins forever is irrelevant. We wouldn't call a team the Wetbacks now, so why would we call a team the Redskins now? Is there some kind of racist grandfather clause I don't know about? And does that have anything to do with the fact that we all have racist grandfathers? Hell, I've noticed a lot of this country is not so happy about the Hispanic population rising, but you'd think not even they could have a problem with Native Americans, right? I mean, George Washington and Davy Crockett are closer to illegal immigrants than they are.

I've also read the argument that when the team was named, they meant it affectionately. Even if that's true (I kinda doubt it - the original owner and president of the team was known as "the leading racist in the NFL"), but even if it's true, those good intentions don't really mean squat. What if The Onion wanted to start a football team and satirically call it the Wetbacks? That carries an intention of anti-offense, but would still be offensive, and would still keep the word alive and easy to say, arguably harming the Hispanic community that way.

I don't know. I think this is a no-brainer, and I always have. I hope this at least got somebody to think about it.

    Huge....WOW.....

Im not going into the 6 or 7 paragraph dissertation about this because almost NOBODY reads it all.

From what I read BFT meant no disrespect toward the Native American. What I gained from this all was BFT more or less asking..."What do they want us to call them? The Washington Native Americans?"

Really? That aint happening....Lets just keep it the Redskins ....Im ok with it....They seem to be ok with it...Lets just leave it as is.....I am in no way speaking for you!! Just my opinion on your thoughts.

If Im wrong on this BFT PLEASE correct me!!!!!......
