Let's view this scenario. If Wallace is offered a contract from a team that is excessive in Pitt's view and they do not match it, Wallace goes and in return we receive an extra first round pick. If that were to happen would we use our extra first round pick and try to move up for Poe, or go some other route? This drama looks like it will come to an end probably this week. Just wondering.

tho I'm all about wallace staying, this scenario is fun to play with.

Best Possible: We get a pick in return for wallace that is high enough to just pick poe outright. Or Poe somehow falls to us at 24, which i cant lie i havent let the hope that this may happen die.

Likely: We get a 1st rounder somewhere later than our current pick (24) and have to package some combination out of all our picks to move up for him.

Personal favorite. (If we have to lose wallace). Just stay put and draft with the two 1st we'd have where they are. I want poe to be a steeler so bad, but the thought of the steelers having a whole draft plus an extra first rounder!? If that happened, I think this would probably be considered colberts finest draft down the line.

Just if we get n the situation of trading up that far, then we have other players who come into play. If we're going to trade up, assume best case for a team to pick up would be chicago at 19, worst case New England at 31. Thats points ranging from 875 to 600, with our 740 points, we can have up to the 6th pick. Then we have to start asking ourselves is Poe the best player available? How about Decastro if we're going to trade that far up? Keuchly? Reiff if he falls. I like Poe. Might not even complain if we traded our third and first to pick him up (I trust our player personal to know the value he would have to the team more than I trust myself), but two first round picks better get you a perennial all-pro.

I think if we get a pick for Wallace I say take two first rounders. we have alot of holes on defense now. we could get hightower and maybe a stud olineman in first round and add to defense with second round pick. If one first rounder we almost have to take a lineman early. I would love to have poe but his combine put him out of reach. some people think around 10 and I would not move up that much for anyone.

No way the Steelers package two first rounders to move up, they'll probably try and get Wallace's replacement plus another player. It's not in their DNA to get rid of two for one. Troy P. not withstanding.

    God Bless!!

Agreed. Even Troy was a 1-3-5, not a 1-1. No way in hell they would give up one of the firsts. They know gold when they see it.

However, they could give up a 2nd or 3rd to move up and nab the guy they want. Say they love DeCastro or Kuechly in the mid-teens, and they have the #24 and #30 pick. Trade the #24 and a 2nd or 3rd and move up to whatever spot you need, land your star, and still have that extra pick at #30 instead of one 30-60 spots later.

His lack of production at the college level along with not dominating play
in his weak conference has me wondering? This could be a crap shoot? Not
sure have to see more film of him.

Poe is going to be a bust Im telling you now. He is just another combine standout who moves up draft boards but will not excel in NFL play. See Vernon Gholston.

If we trade up for Poe, I'll be ripped. Heck, I'd be pretty nervous about him busting even if we don't trade up and take him at #24. Anyone remember Jarron Gilbert a few years ago? He was another guy who climbed the boards fast because of great workout numbers (and an interesting video that supposedly showed him jumping out of a swimming pool). His on the field production in college didn't match the workout numbers. 3 years later, he has been on 3 different teams and has 2 career tackles. Poe may end up being good, but he also may end up being so bad that he never sees an NFL field. You don't waste a 1st round pick - let alone trading up - on someone that risky. You let the perennial loser franchises make those kind of moves.

I am pretty sure that he will be there at #24, despite talking heads like Mayock spouting off about his awesome physical skill set. I am pretty darn sure that he's not on our radar at #24.

For what it's worth, apparently none of the steelers scouts went to Poe's Pro Day this week. They split up and went elsewhere. Maybe they didn't expect Poe to perform (which he didn't do a lot of drills or tests) or they have enough film on him, or they're not interested.

Getting really mixed feelings on Poe. Month and a half ago, I was all for him. Still believe that Hightower would be the best (likely) pick, but if it was Poe, I would be happy. Something about his workout kind of spooked me. Maybe it was too good for a guy his size? The guy should have dominated in college, and by all accounts, he didn't. For the last couple of weeks I've been hoping someone does draft him so we don't have to make that choice.
Then yesterday I watch Mike Mayok go off on how explosive he is, how much of a better d-lineman he is than Brockers, and now I want him again. Mayok doesn't say things without studying film. Thats his life and his reputation. He talked about hearing what was said about Poe, then going back and going over the tapes himself. And being impressed.
There are a number of people I will be very happy with in the first round. I guess, once again, Poe is one of them.

Just wanted to bring this back to the top. Poe is falling relatively quickly on a lot of draft boards. This morning I saw him ranked as the 4th defensive tackle, behind Brockers, Cox, and Still. The chances of him being there at 24 are increasing, as are the chances of Cordy Glenn being there, as well as Adams and Hightower. Could be the first time in years where there will be some actual choices for our first round pick, all of whom would improve our team this coming year.
I'm so confused. It was so easy a week or two ago. Glenn and Hightower are the safer picks, who would step in and do what we expect them to do. Adams and Poe are the boom-or-bust picks, could be awesome, could be people we have to draft replacements for in two or three years. But Glenn and Poe weren't going to be there, and I just don't trust Adams.

Funny you mention that. Yesterday I saw the same thing, that Poe's stock was falling.

Then today I read the Cowboys are all giddy over him. So who the EFF knows. I'm also reading Hightower could go to the Cards.

People rise, people fall. If Hightower goes earlier, more chance that Glenn or Martin falls. Wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen to our o-line.

silatolu moved up into the 1st. brooks was close to the first early 2nd. i'd much rather silatolu then glenn. glenn can't move like that. i think the first round could turn into a big guy fest. if poe drops, so will chapman and martin and the rest. wolfe i think moves up a couple. as for silatolu, theres alot to work with there. he's going to be one nasty guard. i want him.

mac I like him too but I think he's there in round 2. I'd take my chances b/c even if he's not there's a lot of good guards in that range

It's funny that Poe's stock is "falling." Is it really? Did real NFL GMs and scouts with their jobs on the line really buy into Poe's awesome combine performance and ignore his invisible man impression on the field at Memphis? I think not. I think that the talking heads like Mayock went gaga over his measurables, and now that they realize that real NFL personnel people haven't bit like they did, all of a sudden Poe's stock is "falling."

I wouldn't touch Poe with Pick #24. No way. Sure, he has tons of potential upside because of his physical gifts, but so what? Lots of players who have huge potential upside never pan out. Give me a proven football player in the 1st round. Someone who has done it on the field already, not some weightlifter who has potential, but hasn't done anything with it - even though he only played against borderline Div 1AA (excuse me... FCS) competition. Seriously - if the guy is so great, how is it that he didn't absolutely DOMINATE at that level?

If he's still there in the 2nd... well then we can talk about the risk perhaps being commensurate with the potential reward. Until then - NO to Poe!

my thinking on this guy is not only the way he can move and put up multiple blocks in the run game but he can do it from 4 different spots on the o-line. that's what guys later on in the 2nd don't bring to the table. yes there are good guards later on, but not to many with this type of ability. being able to jump to LT,or RT is a biggy. they can design runs for him to lead block from any position on the line and still make multiple blocks on the move, ala pouncey. he's also very good at switching off and passing guys off to other linemen and recognizing stunts and late blitzes. he's got the athletic ability to pick these up, which has been a big problem for this line in the past. the nasty attitude is also something missing from our linemen for quite some time lately. i think he could really compliment pouncey and allow his abilities come out. we have not had a guard that can move like this guy in a long, long time. he would allow us to run to the right or left, also something we have been sorely missing. he is also not going to allow a jailbreak coming at our qb play in and play out up the middle. something we also are sorely needing to keep ben upright and working in the pocket. i just think he brings so much good to the offense, to allow it to work like it's capable of doing. i see some decent guys in the second ,but not with his upside as the major piece of the puzzle needed on the o-line. he will make every other weapon we have on O work properly, but hey, i'm an o-line junkie.

sorry about highjacking this thread not intended. i like chapman alot. i like martin alot. if we wait though, i still like kitchen and jean-baptiste. i think they have as much upside as any of the early guys. martin brings flexability though as a guy that can move to DE too if needed and can be just as effective from either spot. he will bring speed as well as stregnth to either spot, which makes him a twofer.

Thanks to a number of great youtube posters, there are now complete games of many prospects out there where you can watch every snap that the guy plays in a game. I just watched two of those for Poe - the Tulane and Arkansas State games from 2011. To put it simply, there's no way that the film comes close to matching the combine numbers. He showed flashes here and there, but for the most part he was washed out against pretty mediocre competition. In fact, in the Ark State game, he was routinely owned in 1 on 1 blocking by both the right and left guards for Ark State. They ran at him several times, and made some pretty big plays in the run game right at his position. In fairness to Poe, he looked quite a bit better when Memphis kicked him to the 5 technique in their 3 man fronts.

    My observations:

    1. He is (at best) a 2nd - 3rd round prospect, and that's more due to measurables than game film. Without the measurables, he's a 6th-7th round developmental prospect.
    2. He is NOT a NT. People see 350 lbs. and automatically figure him as a nose. However, he is 6'4" and plays pretty high off the ball. In the games that I watched, smaller, weaker guards were able to get under his pads and pretty much neutralize him. However, when he was kicked out to the 5 technique (DE in a 3 man front), he slowed flashes because the tackles that he matched up against played a bit higher. He looked a lot more natural, comfortable and quick in that spot because he was able to fire off the ball and not try to squat first. As a result, he actually caused a bit of disruption on occasion. His best NFL position is probably the DE in a 3-4.
    3. He seemed gassed later in the Ark State game. By the end of that film, he was getting embarrassed by guards who looked to be about 6'1" 275. I don't know if he lacks stamina, or just quit, but it is a red flag.

I leave this thread with a nugget that I heard from Pat Kirwan when a Steeler fan called in gushing about Poe a week or 2 ago. Kirwan asked the guy something like "really, which of his 5 career sacks at Memphis did you like the most?" The point being - there's no good production or film there. It's all about raw potential. Boom/Bust all the way, and in no way worthy of pick #24.

This is my feeling too, Poe is a 3-4 DE...he is not a NT in the mold of what the Steelers are looking for.

I don't know if you can just look at Sacks as a stat for this guy though. Tackles, Tackles for a loss, and QB hurries would be better.

I think I saw Mayock ranked him 4th best DT in the draft, Jerel Worthy being higher....that was surprising to me especially if Poe is being compared to Ngata.

is it out of the question for wolfe to be able to fill in at NT and also backup DE. he has played on the interior at cin. he ties up blockers and does well against double teams. he gets good penatration and gets off blocks to make tackles well.
