Yeah I think he's getting franchise tagged.

But if someone could slip something in the Texans GM's drink to have him released, then we can start a riot until he is brought into the Burgh.

    Hypothetically of course :dancing:

Not necessarily for Clowney. Unlike most Franchise Tagged players, Clowney's is a bit different. Better explained below:

    Gone
    Dirty Red
    DHB
    Grimble
    Hunter
    McCullers
    Gilbert ( maybe)
    Ridley

    Keep the obvious, plus
Keep Dupree only if you can sign him to a longer deal at a reasonable price. Not worth 9 million.

Keep Burns. No reason to get rid of him. 1st rd potential with a low cap hit.

    Keep Berry.
    Keep Boz

I wouldn't have a problem with 17 mill for a player like him at edgerusher, which is how they should have it labeled as opposed to OLB or DE.

He's undisputed one of the top edge rushers up there with Khalil Mack.

I can't imagine the Texans not getting him tagged. So bringing him into the Burgh probably isn't going to happen.

Dee Ford is another potential target.

If nabbing a pass rusher is still the top priority, then Jachai Polite is the primary option I am afraid. Issue with him is that a pass rusher should not be the main option here. For that matter, Pittsburgh might be better off acquiring a pass rusher in the second round and obtain a cornerback in Free Agency.

Nope. But a long term deal worth 6ish million a year seems about right. Takes away that 9m hit this year for the long term security of a 3-4 year contract for the player. I think that’s a good move. Dupree is decent player and we need to focus our energy on getting a CB2 and an ILB1. No use wasting time getting rid of guys that are fine players. You can’t have studs everywhere. Dupree is a good keep imo.

I think you will see a fairly large shift in our roster come next year,
I honestly feel they will be active in FA.

Withe AB saga playing out this observation may go out
the door, may not have as much cap space as I thought.

The 2019 franchise tender for a DE is estimated to be $17 million (per Over The Cap).

The thing with Burnett is you have to pay him around 4 million, you can't count on him for anything close to 16 games.

He had a nice sack of Rivers, he also laid a hard hit on the Chargers RB after he caught a pass, that play was close to being a fumble. We definitely need to see him play better next season, especially in coverage.

Burnett is injury prone though, and at that 4 million salary . Burnett also was in coverage when the Raiders got that 35 yd pass in the 4th qtr to set up a TD.

A lot of those Florida defensive players tend to be busts in the NFL, just one example Dante Fowler hasn't lived up to his draft position.

I would watch Jachai Polite if I were you. He is much different from Dante Fowler Jr. Exploded on the scene this season. Had he remained injury free in his sophomore campaign a season ago with his stellar junior campaign, Polite may be talked about as the most athletic and explosive pass rusher in the draft and not Josh Allen.

His game in the Peach Bowl did not amount to much on paper. However, keep in mind that Jim Harbaugh waa actively avoiding Polite on every play; Polite drawing double teams no less. Imagine pairing him with someone like T.J. Watt.

I doubt he would be there at #20 if he's the most explosive pass rusher in the draft.

    My point exactly.

I would not be surprised if he is long gone by then. Right now, I have a Top 15 grade on him. Pending on his combine performance, he could jump as high as Top 5.

Cutting Gilbert,Burnett and Dupree saves them 15 mil. Gilbert has already been replaced by Feiler. Burnett by Edmunds with both Allens that can play safety as well. Dupree can be replaced by Ola and Adams in a platoon. They can also address OLB in the draft and FA.

Personally I feel Chickillo is just as good if not better then Dupree. As good isn't saying much. Dupree starts because bingo he is a 1st round pick. So some want him to come back at 9 mill then sign him long term? Long term? What justifies him staying with this team? Let him go and finally get it together with another roster. It will happen any year now. He is one of the weak links. They need a Watt type player on the other side that has to be accounted for, teams prepare for. Watt is mauled usually because they know that Dupree will be swallowed up playing patty cake and being pushed into know mans land behind the QB. And don't give me he is good in coverage. Please. He is a lazy player with a 4 cylinder motor. This defense needs change not trying to wait another year for an average at best player to finally get it together. This was supposed to be the year! Fail. Hopefully they rescind the 5th year option.

This is what I have been saying in previous posts, that creativity can transform this
team to be on the much needed path towards qualifying and competing for the Superbowl.
Lets take some chances, lets deal, lets make things happen. This existing roster was not
good enough to make the playoffs so lets change it.

It's not really being that creative. If those guys are cut you won't even know they're gone. There are a handful at least of others that you can say the same. Trim all the fat. We have enough fat heads on the team...,
