Why not pooch it straight up in the air 20-25 yards downfield and have everybody on both teams scramble for it?

The success rate would jump dramatically.

    Just a thought.

This loss sucks no matter what but I just don't understand the onside kick standard of ten yards to the opposing player.

It's a high risk low reward regardless. But sure, why not? I hear ya... Shake the approach up.

I would say just punt it (if you can do that) straight up in the air.

I think because of the fair catch rule. if it doesn't touch the ground they can fair catch it

The approach is stale and completely outdated. I can't believe the ST coaches keep trying them. F'n drill it right at the head of somebody on the opposing team if you have to. Scramble for the ball.

They can but if you catch them off guard they might not call FC.

I'd say even higher risk and lower reward. It would be near impossible to hit a player >10 yds away with a kicked ball *and* have it deflect back to the kicking team enough to recover it. End-over-end, velocity on a bounce, and right at 10 yds is your highest potential.

Dor just go status quo and try to keep the team from drawing flags? Idk... Like I said high risk low reward but gotta love it when it bounces your way

I would just have Suisham kick it right down the middle of the field bouncing it as many times as possible.
    The sideline is a limiter.

The first one was pretty good except for DHB screwing up.

Or how about not putting ourselves in the position to drag this discussion out?

Tomlin's next creative idea will be to defer the opening possession and then onsides the kick. :dancing:

i thought you couldn't fair catch a kickoff - only punts.

Yikes, guys. If the ball doesn't bounce, they can fair catch it, and we have zero shot at recovery. So you have to bounce it and try to get it to hop.

It could potentially work as a surprise move, if you can get it in just the right spot AND if you are targeting a real sucker who doesn't know what he's doing AND you get a lucky bounce, but most times you're just giving away field position when you do that. And if you try it when you're behind towards the end of the game, it'll never work.

For the standard onside kick, you might not be able to tell depending on how well the kicker performed, but they are trying to get the ball to hop up high as if it was a pooch. They're doing their best to simulate that, while taking away the fair catch. If you leave the fair catch option there for them, we have zero chance. Can't even hit them; we'd have to hope they drop it all the way to the ground on their own.

Nope, you can do it on both. Obviously you very rarely see it on a kick-off.

Interesting fact - if time expires while the ball is in the air, and a fair catch is called, teams can opt for one more play, but it has to be a kick at goal.

Time does not have to expire. In fact, if the fair catch came on a kickoff, that's impossible, because the clock doesn't run while the ball is in the air.

However, time often is expired, because why else would you do it? If you had more time, you'd run an offensive play.
