Two big throws and suddenly everyone was wrong about Mason Rudolph. LOL

(It is two, the long touchdowns to Pickens. The long pass before the half was a poor throw and Pickens bailed him out with a spectacular catch. Pickens beat his man cleanly and if Rudolph puts the ball out in front of him, it's a touchdown.)

Long thread to read through.... I'll give my answers/thoughts/opinion.

    1. Mason - It's hard for me to say anything definitively. They buried him pretty deep, even with Mitch being a complete fail. Mason is the guy that's been here and knows 'the offense.' He should have been #2 early on. Yes, there are contract reasons and so on... but his play seems to have him at #2. Even at camp, I noted he was throwing the ball pretty well.

    2. Mitch - I was not wrong. He sucks.

    3. Ben Holding back Canda - that's a farce. But Ben was not 100% and limped through those last 2 years. Had Canada been legit, maybe one could say that.

4.Canada - see #2. The Canada offense is a joke and it still is.

    5. Tomlin - I've said it many times. '17 years is an eternity in the NFL.' He has a very high reputation and many of the media and fans I've talked with say "We'll take him." I think here. in "Steelers Talk" a bit of the fantasy football comes out, armchair GM's. But, where is football going? Analytics. The next question is how do we get there and is Tomlin that guy? I can't say but I do feel the Steelers like others need to incorporate that. I despise the practice but realize it is a science that seems to work. Tomlin needs to be on board and figure out ways to best use it.

As for blame - that goes with losing. a 3-game skid when smelling playoff position is the worst stench, like riding by the freshly ran over skunk and it gets in your air vents and lingers in the car for 5 miles. A lot of assigned blame will be braced up with bad narrative and explanations to justify the reasoning and that 3-game skid just allows that stuff to fester.

The Pittsburgh Steelers as whole made some bad decisions. Keeping Canada was among the worst and coupled with some personnel moves that didn't pan out as expected, makes for a bad result. Add in some injuries and the whole thing goes south.

I'm kind of feeling Tomlin should resign. It's not the end of the world. The front office needs to do their job in that "Yes Mr Tomlin, we do need to upgrade this coaching staff some." Maybe then they mine out the next Head Coach.

    You poor....poor man. LoL.
Yeah if He only completed 2 passes.....I wouldn't have said anything. Some of those plays....if You bother to go look are the same exact plays we couldn't get anywhere with before. If You didn't see Him quickly scan the field....not once but multiple times, and actually step up when He could instead of constantly putting His OL in a bad place....then I'm wasting My time. I know You are knowledgeable about football, but how can You then be so dumb about the Qb position???
A Qbs play will always make the OL, and weapons look either better, or worse.

The Mason mania is real and it’s spectacular. No, not really, it’s pretty sad actually but it will crash back down to earth soon.

It's why I take the Pirates with a grain of salt or I'd be miserable to the end.

Fans, especially the younger ones got use to a lot of decent seasons with Ben. Older fans remember how it went after Terry, younger ones are like what the F. Got to realize the Steelers will have down years and it will be more then one. The thing with the Steelers is they are not perennial losers like fans associate with the Lions (Go Lions), Browns etc. IMO they will return as a force but you got to put up with some crap along the way.

I really liked what I saw from Mason Saturday, but it wasn’t the deep passes. I already knew he could throw long down the sidelines. That’s always been his best asset. I liked that he made several throws in the 5 -15 yard range in stride or in the holes between zones. I never saw consistency with those throws from him before - in college or the NFL.

However, Pickens made plays that turned a good day for Rudolph into a great day. The first TD was a nice 20 yard gain, and it was a throw that our other QBs did not give us (even when it was open). However, it was a combination of Pickens freakish ability and a really poor angle by Dax Hill that turned a 20-22 yard gain into an 86 yard TD. Even if Hill had played it correctly and limited it to 20 yards, it was still a throw that our other QBs haven’t made, so that’s a big plus for Mason. On the 44 yard completion when Pickens barely got his feet down, that was not a well thrown ball. Pickens made a great catch to get the big gain, but he was open behind the defense for a TD if it were a well thrown pass. I’ve also got to give big kudos to the pass protection on that play. It took a while to develop and Rudolph only needed to take a slight step up to keep fully clean and unpressured.

While I agree with you that QBs often make WRs look better, the opposite happens as well. In this case Pickens came up with two monster plays that boosted Mason’s game from a good outing to a great outing. That said, Mason put a really solid start on tape. In my view it was the best of his career, especially given the stakes. He’s now put that kind of game on tape, and even though I still have doubts about him being a true longer-term starter, he made me a hell of lot more comfortable with him as a quality backup. It was just one game though. Let’s see how he does in Seattle. Hopefully it wasn’t fluke.
