Old roster thoughts?

I hear the talk about how old our roster is and it really doesn't bother me. Below is a list of our ten oldest players and my thoughts on their age. The only positions which are truly limiting us will likely be gone next year. With the exception of QB and secondary, the important positions where we will definitely be losing big-time talent are very well backed up. QB and secondary are critical for this year.

In a couple years these ten positions will likely have an average age of 23-24, let's say it's 24, that brings our team average down by 1.8 years or 97 years total. If nothing happens, other than everybody being a year older, it puts us in the younger teams in the league.

 

I recall Warren Sapp (ultimate Steelers hater) saying our defense was "old, slow, and over"..

That old, slow, and over unit went on to lead the league in total defense

 

4 of those guys will be gone next year possibly 5. It’s much ado about nothing. 2 of the positions you can play into old age such as the kicker and punter.

 

The age of the defense is a huge concern for me

 

Heyward really skews it and then add in Ramsey, Watt and Dean and that just adds to it. We have alot of young pieces and a lot of depth. I think the age thing is a misnomer on our situation. It’s a nice mix and the older players are still playing at a high level and producing. Hopefully we can use the depth and younger guys to keep the older guys fresh and prevent injuries.

 

If those guys performed at an average or below level, I would be concerned, as it is, I am not.

Edge - old and prime and young
Ilb - prime and young
Cb - old, prime and young
s - old and young

Many of the old guys are in positions that allow for aging veterans to thrive - Qb, DT, K, P.
A lot of these guys will be gone in a year or two and we already have their replacement on the roster.
Literally in a couple of years this will be one of the youngest rosters in the league.

 

Watt was tied for 35th in the league in sacks last year, but someone thinks he is still top five.

 

These roster age average things are useless nonsense. This isn't the over the hill gang or anything dramatic. They have some really old guys that skew the math.

It is internet noise because actual analysis of football content is both hard and not possible to create enough to fill the voracious demand.

 

How the hell does Bengals have an older offense than we do?

Rodgers, alone, should skew the average age of Steelers offense to the red.
