I'm looking forward to doing some cap breakdowns. From preliminary views, they are going to be in pretty good shape when you factor in obvious cuts/restructures

I think we saw a couple of backups who filled in admirably this year. May save us some money down the road.

At least we will get that Woodley/Polamalu $13 million hit off the books.

Maybe just give us a minute to digest the loss first...?

Disagree with that writer's take. I went to overthecap.com, and was easily able to put us 21 million into the surplus in 3 minutes of playing around.

Edit - quoted wrong post for some reason.... Meant to respond to the one with the link.

You don't have to get involved in the thread if you're still digesting this loss. Not like the thread title doesn't make it pretty obvious what it's about.

I honestly don't think we'll lose any of our key players. From what I've seen, everyone wants to stay playing for Pitts

I think we'll be able to extend some guys, and maybe even grab a starting caliber DB.

So passing game doesn't skip a beat without AB. Blasphemy I know, but do they mortgage the team to sign him to a huge contract and lose Bell and Wheaton, or dare I say...

AB needs to get paid. Best WR in the game. Get a new contract done before camp. He threatened to hold out last summer, but really didn't. I know he has 2 years left, but he will need a raise; otherwise some type of holdout is likely.

Yeah, and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

They're not in any serious trouble. I posted a minor breakdown of some likely offseason moves and maneuvering they will do in a couple of threads the past couple of months. I'll do it again after the loss today has some time to work it's way out of my system.

The moves they make aren't going to be so much about scrambling under the 2016 figure, but about who they plan on retaining as part of the team's core. The main issue facing them this offseason is replacing the secondary - literally. Three-quarters of it will be FA's this spring. While we obviously wouldn't lament the loss of the Blakes of the world, they weren't especially expensive players either. Maybe they make a run at Boykin - with as little as he played this year it's hard to imagine him getting a big offer elsewhere - to keep with Gay, Golson, and what will likely be their 1st or 2nd round pick.

As far as the cap, they will likely enter the offseason about $8M under. They'll need to sign the rookie class and look at some mid-to-low $ resignees, but they'll also likely extend Timmons to free up about $8M as well. That alone should be fine, but there are other tweaks that they can make as needed.

I could easily see AB looking for 12-13 million per year minimum.

Can't afford the 4 B's...someone will have to go...that's why you need to win before they need to get paid...

you realize that when you read that, the other 4 teams are massively over the cap, and the Steelers are "up against the cap"? but they're still rated 3rd, over the Dolphins ($20 mil over), the Saints (14 mil over), the Jets(9 Mil over) the Bills (2 Mil over) and then the Steelers ($1 mil UNDER). As if we're going to go out and spend a bundle in free agency. Just because for some god-knows-what reason they rated us third? Cripes. The sky is falling.

I don't know what the answer is, but you realize many organizations fall for that trap and it ends up crippling them, right?

Sometimes. But usually when teams make stupid, expensive moves, it's to get someone else's player. Internal big money re-signings seem to me to have a significantly better success rate.

Didn't skip a beat? We had some big plays on busted coverages, but he went for almost 200 yards and had 2 TDs last time we faced the Broncos. We also scored over 30 in that game... How many did we score today?

I thought today showed why Bell and Brown are so vital to the team. If signing AB causes us to lose Bryant, so be it. We've always seemed to draft the WR position well, so we will fill that spot. You gotta sign the guy who is a better player, and that is AB by far.

We should have plenty of money to keep any of our own FA's we want to. I doubt we extend AB, but we should. Bell and DD should be due contracts. Maybe we let Beach walk and go after a SS in FA (like Iloka) or we can just take care of our own and try to hit in the draft. Lots of options

I think we are headed in the right direction, a few more pieces and we will
be able to compete and win the Superbowl. I think our cap numbers are managble

Timmons will be either extended or cut which will just about put an end to their salary cap issues

That site is crap, the Steelers aren't in salary cap trouble the salary cap is expected to go up by 10 million to 153 million. Restructure Timmons, extend DeCastro, Bell sorry AB he will have to wait until 2017.
