Offseason Plan....

The time has finally come, the time to look toward the future. I know we aren't officially eliminated in the standings, but it is inevitable at this point.

I came into this exercise thinking...man our offense stinks...we have holes all over the place, our whole draft will be on offense. The only problem is, I think we are currently in worse shape on defense. I cannot do this without a roster analysis, so here goes.

Offense: (25) 3 Potential Draft Positions

QB: Ben, Grad, Landry
RB: Bell, Dwyer, Stevens-Howling, Jones
FB: W. Johnson - for me this is only needed if we are actually going to use him in the offense. 15 catches last year....6 this year.
TE: Heath, Spaeth, New TE, not sure where we draft this guy, but I think we need one, and not a 7th rounder.
WR: Brown, Cotchery, Wheaton, Moye, New BIG PHYSICAL WR....J. Brown may also get a shot
OLINE: Pouncey, Velasco, Embernate, Gilbert, Whimper, Adams, DeCastro, Beachum, Foster....if we get a shot at a DeCastro type Tackle, we may also draft someone.


Defense: (25) 7 Potential Draft Positions

Defensive Line: Heyward, Hood, Woods, McLendon...2 Openings. Fangupo, Nic Williams, and Arnfelt may all get looks. Maybe we draft someone. It could be NT or DE, but I doubt it is more than 1.

Outside Linebacker: Woodley, Jones, Carter - who I think only stays because we have to have some experience at the backup position. New Player

Inside Linebacker: Williams, Timmons, Garvin or Sylvester, 2 New Players (I am not sure what to think about Spence yet, will the team trust his ability to play or will they fill the position)

Cornerback: Allen, Gay, and Taylor. Brown MIGHT get a shot as a special teams guy. 1 or 2 New Players.

Safety: Troy, Allen, Shamarko, and Golden, 1 New Player

Special Teams:

Kicker: Suisham

Punter: New Punter

Long Snapper: New

That is a LOT of holes to fill, and I mean a LOT! Especially on the defense.

The irony to me is this, we need the playmakers NOW on the offensive side of the ball, but we have WAY more holes on the defensive side of the ball. We need that impact TE to make plays, we need that impact WR to make plays, but I am not sure we are any better next year on defense without getting some impact players in here.

 

I'm sure that was a typo. No way we give up on Jones that quick.

 

Not sure, but I suspect you ment to say defensive here rather than offensive.

My take vs what you are suggesting:

QB: Ben, Grad, Landry They might look at someone else to possibly replace Grad, depends on how much money they can free up elsewhere.

RB: Dwyer, Stevens-Howling, Jones IMO, I don't necessary see all of these three to be the answer as Bell's backup. Apparently. the Steelers don't either or they wouldn't be cycling RB's thru the practice squad to see if they can find someone else (a really good move on their part) IMO.

Cornerback: with all of the other needs, they will only draft 1, not 2.

Punter: I just don't seeing them drafting anyone, too many other needs.

Long Snapper: A new one likely needed due to cap reasons, but I doubt they will use a draft pick on one.

Everything else you're suggesting, I'm ok with.

 

I hope our offseason plan is to go to San Francisco and mine for gold and find enough money to pay people that are not horrible.

 

7-8 good draft picks, UDFA's and a couple of mid or lower level FA's could do the trick, or at least be a good start. after next year we can get rid of Woodley, t-roy and ike.

 

At least Colbert is good for one thing ... we can finally agree on something. LOL

 

hood is gone and i would keep worilds , we have two de that i like waiting arnfelt and williams . woodley is a cap problem tha has to be solved . ike has to take a pay cut

 

Here is what I came up with....Troy would have to essentially take a pay cut and a few other tweaks here and there to get enough cap space for draft picks and small free agents...IMO ..didnt show up like I wanted it to from the website I used...

I hate to say it but maybe next season should be a 'dump' salary space season? The won-loss record would take a hit again but they can only kick the can down the road so far.

 

it's a possibility , at least in a two years we should have a clean space cap and 2 years of new high draft picks , the problem is ben , will he stay in a total rebuilding team ?

The other problem is freak is that if the freaking O-line could stay healthy they might actually be able to dominate games....They haven't been playing bad...and you can see the results ...

 

I would like for them to re-sign Velasco, Worilds, and Cotchery they might be too expensive to bring back though. Cotchery they should be able to get him on the cheap.

 

yes and i would not take a left tackle high in the first since beside, jake matthews i'm not sold on all the others , i would trade down and take a te or big wr in the first round. then in the second i would take scherr as left tackle , or sefarian jenkins (he had a bad year but his a monster ) if we went wr in the first , let's go offense with the first 3 picks , than add all defense in the rest of the drafts cb sf nt ilb

I think Hood stays. Fortunately for us, he hasn't been stellar enough to put himself into the position of being a coveted DE.

 

I don't see us going into to next season without Ike. Clark should be gone. But that leaves. Gay and Cordez Allen at Corners and Troy and Thomas at Safeties. Who will be the third corner?

I seriously doubt Worilds returns. Why would he? He would be paid hansomely next year by another 3-4 team.

Need that big receiver and TE.

Hood probably won't return either. But I would welcome him back if it's a reasonable price.

So, we need, CB, S, WR, TE, OL, NT.

I don't see us needing a WR or NT next year. AB, wheaton, moye, j.brown, re-sign cotchery if possible. NT- mclendon,fangupo, and re-sign woods.

 

Maybe not a NT but another DE if Hood and Kiesel is gone. I think we need that bigger physical target in the red zone. Seems like every legitmate team has one. Denver (Thomas) Saints, (Colston), Bears (Jeffery, Marshall) Patriots (Gronk), Bengals (Green) Browns (Gordon). But maybe Moye can be that guy.
