    Your confusing "starting" with "starter".

KB didn't want to show his hand to the Dolphins (today nor when we played earlier this season - saving it all for next week)

That should be you're, and I'm really not. The Steelers have been starting three receivers much of the season. If you wish to consider Heyward-Bey the starter over Hamilton, that's fine. That may be how it goes next week. The point still stands. The Steelers were only without four starters on offense. Of course, those are the four most important players on that offense.

That's OK - Gleason and Godfrey are long gone too. Jan Hammer may be still around.

Brown, Wheaton, Rogers were the starters

    Coates is the #4

    DHB is the #5

Hamilton and Ayers are the practice squad #6 and 7.

Ricardo matthews is a starting because Heyward is out for the year. That doesn't make him a starter.

If the guy ahead of you on the depth chart is out, that makes you #1, no?

that's simply saying "The Starters were playing because they Started"

Ben Roethlisberger was out, that doesn't mean you call Landry Jones the starter, in a conversation where the context is the quality of players on the field.

Again, it may be semantics, but in this conversation... there is a difference between "starter" and "starting". Cobi Hamilton, Landry, Jones, Demarcus Ayers, BJ Finney, etc, were starting, they are not starters.

Dak Prescott was #3 QB in Dallas at start of the season. Does that mean he isn't a starter?

No Dak was the starter before the preseason ended. He's been the starter all year.

Do you agree with the poster who stated that Cobi Hamilton is a starter?

No I don't agree that Hamilton is a starter. I understand what you are saying but your comment about Dak just seems a tad hypocritical to me. There was no way that Dallas intended for Dak to even play this season let alone start. When an injury displaces the #1, its next man up as MT would say. That means you are now the starter. Now what the player does with opportunity is what really matters.

I get what you're saying. Hamilton may be starting, but it's due to injury. I don't think ( I hope) anyone is under the illusion that Hamilton is starting material?

a page or two back, someone countered my statement about not having our starters by saying we had Cobi Hamilton (he's a starter).... that's where this one went off the deep end.

hopefully this brings the context others joining may have missed

This started with my comment of "all backups on offense". Now, while that is misleading due to the offensive line, what I was saying was:
Landy, Dwill, Jesse, Ayers, Hamilton are all backups. They are. It's not debatable. They've played their roles, and filled in for injuries, suspensions, resting starters, etc. But they are all backups. period.

This then spun out of control to the point where someone labeled Cobi Hamilton a starter. If Cobi Hamilton is a starter (because he's starting), then... all the starters played yesterday

Sorry - missed my cue badly Sir. While not as funny as "Dave's Not Here" - something goofy happened to "Jim" McGuinn lead singer/guitarist of the Byrds when he supposedly disappeared to Rio in late 60's/early 70's and came back as "Roger" McGuinn (alien abducted version). Maybe that's what happened to #84 as well?

I understood your point completely. And I agree... mostly. It just means they got a start. However, I think your position broke down a bit when I brought up Dak, or for that matter, Savage who is the starter now that osweiler sucked so bad. Heck, for that matter, how about Ben? He came in due to injury and never looked back. Would you have said Ben was not the starter after he came in after Tommy gun went down against the rats and then started the next week against Miami? As I recall, most of us weren't exactly thrilled about losing Maddox and turning over the reins to a rookie. At what point would you have considered Ben the starter in Pitt? Was is after he 5 in a row? Maybe 10 in a row? Or was it after he won 13 in a row? I'm curious how you think about that now based on your comments.

You can have this one. I don't think there is any comparison what so ever to a QB drafted to be the future/bad QB being benched in favor of someone else... and a practice squad WR, getting a start due to injury/resting someone. I think your example is far outside the context of what was being debated.

I didn't intend for it to be an argument or adversarial. I really was curious at what point you would consider a backup to be considered a starter. Legit question.

When they are named the starter for performance reasons, not when they are subbing in for a few games due to injuries, suspensions, resting players, etc

And this is still outside the context for the talent we were playing with yesterday
