I don't mean guys who grew up around these ( Marino, Kelly, Montana) necessarily. I'm strictly talking athletes playing in the city today. Would it be Ben, AB, Bell, McCutchen ( sp?)?

Sidney Crosby is by far and away the most popular athlete not only in Pittsburgh but also in his sport.

But if you go by team.

Steelers- Big Ben, or AB, Bell is a close 3rd, as face of the franchise. But, I'll go with Ben since he's been here the longest.

Pirates- McCutchen for sure. But, he may be gone, so it might soon be some one else.

Penguins- Crosby and Malkin. But, Crosby is #1 by a long shot.

I assume you mean presently. If true, then it's Sydney Crosby.

Football may still rule Pittsburgh but Sid and the kids are gaining ground fast. I was watching some documentary stuff on the Penguins and found it interesting that Burkle the silent partner of the Pens ownership group wanted to buy the Pirates and turn them around. Imagine what that would have been like.

Worldwide, particularly in Latin America, very likely. But Roberto has been gone a long time, if you're younger than 50, Clemente is only a historic figure, like Babe Ruth. Hockey has a large following in Europe, I suspect Sid and Malkin are more well known internationally than any current or recent PGH athlete. I'll bet both those guys make a good bit of cash from foreign endorsement deals. McCutcheon probably as well. And before his troubles Jung-ho Khang was the biggest superstar in Korea.

Mario lemieux should be huge. He kept Hockey in Pittsburgh and I'm guessing Pittsburgh sport fans are real happy about that. Nothing beats a Championship.

Imagine if MLB would have let Cuban buy them instead of Nutting.

Currently? Probably Crosby but only because of AB and Bells antics. There's no Hines, Bus, or Keisel type of player. Maybe Juju or Watt in a few years.

Now that gave me a flashback. Back around 82 I was in a dinky Colorado mountain town and stopped for a beer. It seemed like a good idea. They had a guest DJ. I paid no mind until he said "This is the Daddio of the Raddio".

Business idea: set up shop in Pittsburgh selling only Holba, Moye and Mauro jerseys.

    I can't see it failing.

To diversify their marketing potential, have to add Derek Bell and Raul (now in the clinker) Mondesi gear for Pirate fans.

I live in Central PA, and im surprised how many people mentioned Crosby. The city i live in must not watch hockey, I love Crosby im just surprised Pittsburgh would put an NHL player over an NFL Player.
Where i live its simple its a NFL and MLB town who predominately roots for Pitt teams with some Philly fans sprinkled in.
Of current Athletes the most popular is Ben, Cutch, and AB.
As for All Time Athletes i see more people with Polamalu jerseys and Heath Miller jerseys than Ben and AB put together.
So i would say those 2 are really revered in Williamsport.

We went off on tangents here so I was going to ask the OP for clarification. Then I noticed he was clear.

Most popular athlete playing in the city today.

    I'll assume "today" indicates "currently".

ThereforE, the answer would seem to be Sid.

With the Pens allowing 15 goals in first two games, Sid may drop a few centimeters on the scale by default.

Jimmy needs to up his time table because clearly the "we are comfortable starting the season with the players we have" strategy isn't working

Sid has taken his team to back to back championships, not to mention he's won literally everything there is to win. It almost doesn't matter what happens this year with the Pens, Sid is the man in Pittsburgh for the time being.
