    He was very nice. In fact, the signing was early on a Saturday morning, and he had just flown in the night before. He was dog tired and looked and sounded like he wanted to go back to bed, but he was a trooper and stayed till everyone was gone. Former Phillies pitcher Steve Carlton was signing at the table next to him. How much respect does Joe get? So much so that all these Philadelphia fans, seeing that Mean Joe was there too, came over to the Mean Joe line to get stuff signed.

    And it's true about his hands. They're like bear paws.
