why is anthony mcfarland owed dead money of 180,608.00 dollars? as per over the cap. he was on this list last year too.

speaking of dead money, it amounts to over 14 million this year. pretty good size chunk of change. :hmm:

I have no idea why McFarland is owed dead $. The $14 mill of dead $ has to be left over from the old regime.

Only 8 teams have less "dead money" than the Steelers. Half of the teams have over $25 million. The Bucs have 76 million and the Rams have 74 million. That's the cost of buying a Super Bowl.

McFarland was waived last summer with two years left on his rookie contract that included an annual bonus proration of $180,608. Because he was classified a post-June 1st cut, the Steelers could spread the remaining $360k in bonus allocation over two years, rather than the entire amount hitting the books in 2022.

I know this was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but technically he lost a year earnings-wise, and as a result, about $760k against the version of himself that did not get waived. Signings bonuses are guaranteed; what we see as proration is purely for cap accounting purposes, so the Steelers were on the hook for his $180k x 2 either way, and McFarland had already received the money when he inked the contract.

Base salary is only guaranteed by stipulation of contract, and vet minimums are determined by years of service as lined out in the latest CBA. After being waived last year McFarland was signed to the practice squad, which does not count toward service time in the NFL nor its vet minimums. So instead of earning $895k as a third-year vet of a 53-man roster, he made $207k as a member of a practice squad (-$688k). Signed to a one year contract by the team this year, he was offered the vet minimum for a third year vet (2022's PS does not count toward a year of service) rather than a fourth (-$70k).
