I've seen several mocks by serious drafniks that have us taking him @ #15. As of right now I say no but with so much attention being given him I feel maybe we should breakdown the pros and cons of drafting him.

I know little of him. He's 6'2 around 335 Lbs, considered nimble and strong. Plays DT at Notre Dame and they run both 3 & 4 man fronts. This means he has experience playing the zero-tech and 1-tech. It also seems he had success against Alabama in the 2013 BCS.

    What say you Steeler Nation?

I'd eat my hat. I really never understood why draft sites have mocked him to us.

I say NO. I'm leaning toward DB help the first two rounds. The much anticipated JackAttack mock draft is coming around mid-April...;)

I will be an unhappy camper if they draft Nix in the 1st round. Using a 1st round draft pick on a player that will only see the field on less than 50% of the defensive snaps would be absurd.

I got to say I really would like to upgrade our NT position, I know there have been articles defending McClendon, but a high caliber NT in a 3-4 is a must. Actually, I really like what I saw from Woods in a few games this year, I hope he gets a shot at a possible starting role.

Initially I wanted Steelers to at least consider Nix, he is a first round talent, no doubt. I don't think anyone can deny that.

I am a little concerned about his injury though, and he really isn't super athletic to run sideline to sideline like a young Casey Hampton was able to do quite well. So I'm a bit torn, I'm not sure the Steelers should grab him now.

It's not a must when you spend most of the time in the nickel

like I've said before, I like our d front. get mclendon healthy and with the way heyward is playing, they are all feeding off of it. I think we have a solid talent in arnfelt and they drafted Williams with a lot of upside the coaches thought. woods has been a steady improving player the last two years. he's still learning a new spot as well as DE. he will get better. as they all will. they seem hungry which I like.

I like Nix a lot. I just don't see us going for it. Too many other serious needs. I think Woods should get the nod at NT in the base set and allow McLendon to move to end. This covers us at DE too, and would keep McLendon on the field in the nickel package so he can do more of what we thought he would do well last year... rush the passer (0 sacks in his first year as starting NT).

No thanks to Nix at #15 I hope Mel Kiper and Todd McShay are wrong with their mock drafts. He would be a 2 down player I don't remember him having a good game against Alabama, Eddie Lacy ran the ball down their throats the whole game.

Alabama had 265 rushing yards vs Notre Dame at 5.9 yards per attempt.

I think between McShay and Kiper they got one or two picks correct in their first round mock combined lol safe bet is that they are wrong. Although idt it was entirely Nix's fault they got run on tho, their LB's (Te'o in particular) were absolutely atrocious.

not completely on him your right but barrett jones did own him that night. as long we run a 3-4 we need a stud in the middle. a lot of people smarter than me think this kid is gonna be a great nose tackle. if he can play like casey for the years casey did, it would be a homerun at 15. I just don't know

I wasn't totally defending him either lol but yeah he's really athletic for a big man and has a good motor. I think he will be a pretty darn good NT, and could help us shore up the DE position by kicking McLendon outside. Heyward-Nix-McLendon would be a very nice DL. I just don't see the Steelers going this route tho... we need a CB who can start right away in this draft, as well as a safety who could be in the lineup as soon as year 1 or 2.

It wasn't Nix's job to stop Lacy. It was his job to be disruptive enough to command a double team allowing a LB, Teo', to make the play which he didn't. I haven't seen but heard about Nix continually beating his OL and getting double teamed as a result.

If Nix could be that congesting stalwart NT like Casey I'd be happy with Heyward-Nix-McLendon on the DL.

Not sure I'd want him at #15 though. What if we traded back to early middle 20's?

That might work. I think the Bears (14), Cowboys (16/17) and Chiefs would all like to add someone on the DL, maybe even the Rams (13) too. I guess it just depends on how each team values the NT position. If we knew we could get him in the mid 20's, then it would be a great move to get the guy we want and an extra pick on top of it. I don't think he's really a reach at 15 tho, so if we thought we couldn't trade back and get him... pick #15 is fine

Here is my thing with Nix....if we DON'T take him, if we pass over him in round #1, who else would take him prior to our pick in round #2?

There's a chance that Chicago will like him at pick 14. Their D-Line was atrocious last year. Even if he makes it past us at 15, he's going to be BPA for somebody well before we pick again at 47.

I think a LOT of that depends upon what role people seeing him play. If he is viewed as a 3-4 guy only, it limits him to about 16 teams including us. The question then becomes one of...does he make it past the first round or not? Of those, here are the teams who could take him prior to us in round 2...

    • Cleveland Browns
    • Houston Texans
    • Tennessee Titans
    • Washington Redskins

All the other teams running the 3-4 appear to be drafting AFTER us in round 2.

    • Arizona Cardinals
    • Baltimore Ravens
    • Green Bay Packers
    • Indianapolis Colts
    • Kansas City Chiefs
    • New Orleans Saints
    • New York Jets
    • Philadelphia Eagles
    • San Diego Chargers
    • San Francisco 49ers

I think it may really come down to what the 4-3 teams see of him.

If we go defense, CB is a top priority. Any DB being #2.

He may be a great NT for years to come. But it's not our biggest need. And we need to get faster, better, and more aggressive in the secondary ASAFP.

4-3 teams sometimes use a NT. Nix won't be there in round 2. Nix can play 4-3 as well (like Lotulelei in Carolina).

Steelers are probably drafting offense anyways.

If Nix could be as good as Hampton they SHOULD take him. Rather face 3rd and 8s than 3rd and 2s. Need to stop the run now as much as ever.

I think Nix might be too light on his feet to deal with double teams.

This.. on everything other than we should take him. ;)

I don't think he gets past the Bears which I'm happy about because I think if he's there when we pick the FO just might take him. I want offensive weapons early.

Holmes and Wallace both played 4 seasons then left. 3 seasons of production apiece.

Steelers already have a high-priced WR who is one of the best in the league.

Detroit Lions drafted WRs for years. They still can't make the playoffs with Megatron. They've drafted 8 WRs in the 1st or 2nd since they last won a playoff game.

If Tyler Eifert were in this year's draft I might agree with you but I don't see anyone to eventually replace Miller with pick 15.

Roethlisberger had 3 Probowl WRs and a Probowl TE in 2010 and the Steelers finished 12th in scoring. Not sure when people are going to realise Ben is Russell Wilson not Peyton Manning and that is a good thing.

None of that scares me off.

My brother (Raider fan), yes I accept your condolences, doesn't want to draft a QB because of what happened with Russell. That's ludicrous in my view.. We haven't put any high value resources into the WR position for a while now. It's time IMO.

As for Eifert, I think Ebron and Amaro are both head n shoulders above him as a receiving weapon.

BTW, Holmes was shipped out. He didn't leave by his own accord.

...Then ILB, then OLB... and don't forget pass catchers on offense.

Taking Nix would be ridiculous on many levels, no matter how good he is.
