Whatever pieces of the puzzle he needs to work with in 2013, DL will once again have a top 5 defense as he has consistently done throughout his defensive coordinator coaching career. This is my honest opinion and I believe it to be spot on.
I have trouble though that alot of fans think that the game has passed him by and that he should have retired this past season. On what basis is this judged upon?
Everyone wanting LeBeau gone. Let me hear why?
I can hear Chris Collinsworth already during wk 2 of MNF as he travels a whopping 5 miles to PBS saying DL continues to show why he is a HOF DC and it doesn't look like it will go away anytime soon. Probably right after a Willie Gay CB Blitz.

    I think he's a mastermind, so I can't help you.

Collinsworth is an idiot. I know that's not relevant to this conversation, but it just feels good to say. :smiley1:

At the beginning of last season, doubt was creeping into my mind about him based on players from other teams saying they knew what was coming. But after a shaky start, DL showed why he is still a legend and one of the best defensive minds in the game.

Collinworth may be a pencil headed geek (just feels good to say ;) but an idiot he is not. He doesn't have 7 emmy's for sports announcing for no reason.

In my opinion, LeBeau is going to need to let young guys, potentially including rookies depending on how the draft goes, get some playing time this year. Our coaching staff in general, but especially on D, is very adverse to when it comes to putting young guys on the field. They may make a few mistakes here and there, but they will develop and mature much more quickly as a player because of it and will be better for it in the long run. Every other team is doing it...our system can't be that complex that a guy can't pick it up in 3 years.

We are constantly going into guys 3rd and 4th years without even knowing what we have. It lead us to getting 1 productive year out of Keenan Lewis and the same might happen with Worilds and eventually Heyward too.

I trust in LeBeau and I know he obviously sees these guys in practice and knows who is ready, etc. But the veterans can't continue to take so much time away from our young guys. It's part of the reason we have so many needs on our roster going into this draft IMO.

I just truly believe with the personnel we have, we should be playing 4-3. It makes even MORE sense now that James is gone. Its almost like Colbert has been drafting the past 3 years in anticipation of Lebeau leaving and switching to a 4-3. However, DL continues to hang around.

I look at our starting D and I don't see any holes that make me think....no this D is gonna suck!

    Dline:

Starters: Keisel/McLendon/Hood - Heyward/Ta'amu/Fangupo/Woods as depth. Honestly I think this group may be better than last year. The young kids at NT I think bring quickness that the old man Hampton just didn't have any more.

    OLB:

Starters: Worilds/Woodley - Robinson/Carter/Draft Pick or UDFA. I would be worried about this position, but this is the year the light switch should turn on for Carter and Robinson IMO is no different than Harrison in his current situation.

    ILB:

Starters: Foote/Timmons - Depth is questionable. Injuries could be key here. I don't currently trust our depth at this position, but it would not surprise me to see 2 ILBs taken in this draft. A Minter/Brown future starter type combined with Mauti who I think the Steelers take if they have the opportunity.

    CB:

Starters: Allen/Taylor - Gay/Brown/VanDyke for depth. Allen I think could take a bigger leap this year than Lewis did last year. If he does and starts to create turnovers as well, this group could be special. Brown I think turns the corner this year much like Allen did in the same year.

    S:

Starters: Clark/Troy - Golden/???/??? for depth. There are depth questions here, but I think we see at least 1 S taken in this draft. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me to see a HEAVY D draft period.

I just don't look at those guys and think...man there is no way there is enough there to get the job done. The starters are almost exactly the same as last year's starters and the guys that are replacing them may actually be better than the guys we lost.

My largest concern looking at our D....injuries and depth when they occur. The draft hopefully will impact that.

From what I understand. CC can barely walk anymore. His knees are like jello on an 85 degree day. The guy is obviously wheel chair bound. Makes me wonder if he picks and chooses his appearances according to the most necessary.

Ummm, did people actually read the OP? In it, he speculates what Collingsworth would say in the next Steeler appearenace on SNF, and WHAT HE IS PROPORTED TO SAY ABOUT LEBEAU IS POSITIVE!!!!!

So to all you folks who chimed in confirming that you think CC is an idiot, is that because you disagree with him and thing LeBeau should go? That his time has passed? Or did you just decide to pile on Collingworth?

Frankly, whenever I watch SNF and the Steelers are playing, Chris Collingworth can't get out of his own way praising the Steelers, their players and their organization.

I think the guy's an idiot, and I really can't stand him regardless of who's playing. Is he off limits for some reason?

If you think he's any idiot, fine. He's not off limits at all. But rip him for something he actually does or says not for something somebody speculates he might say some day! If the guy is really an idiot, he'll provide you with plenty of real ammo, you won't need imaginary reasons to rip him.

As far as Im concerned DL could be the STEELERS DC till the day he leaves this earth!!

I remember about one year ago at this time alot of people were on DL to retire. Game has passed him by.....way to old..ect...My prediction at that time was the STEELERS would have a top 3 D in 2012.....Many of you disagreed with me.... We all know how they finished..... ranked 1st....Thank you Coach LeBeau!!...Stay as long as you like!!!!

My problem with Lebeau is his defense is predictable the Titans and Raiders had no problem going down the field at the end of the game. Some of the Raiders commented on they knew what to expect from the Steelers defense and this was against average QB'S. Lack of pass rush his blitzes need to be more creative instead of that same cross dog blitz with the ILB's. Also they need to get the young players on the field quicker like Heyward.

The Raidahs probably wouldn't have talked any smack if they got beat. Same with the Titans. On the other hand, if they watched any tape of the end of 2011, and the beginning of 2012, professional coaching staffs could pick out the tendencies...who is not in shape yet, which corner has the 10-yard cushion, which guys have lost a step. Which guys tend to over-pursue; can we hook 92 around the neck, and not get caught?

I do agree that DL has to get them on the field earlier. He had that luxury when rookie contracts were 5-6 years. Now they're 4 years. The learning curve needs to get a lot steeper. If it doesn't, the Steelers become a farm team on defense. Train 'em up, and watch 'em leave. Run out of time to get cheap service out of the first-contract guys.

Not for nuthin, and not just directed at you,
BUT... To ALL who complain about our rookies sitting on the bench,
Just look at who they have been replacing...
Yeah, NOW, we have kinda reached the end of our "shelf-life"...
I can`t make the same case now, that I could have 3 or 4 years ago...
But it`s hard to earn a starting spot on the roster, when you are behind Pro-Bowlers, or damn near pro bowl talent level...
    Just sayin...:hmmm:
    GO STEELERS!

No slight taken! I generally agree with your post. I was just making the point that they can no longer sit on guys until they're ready to use them/they "learn the playbook".
With 4-year rookie contracts, the "sit till year 3 if you don't get it right off the bat" is down to about week 8-9 of the rookie year. They have to get on the field and take their lumps.....not like before, where you could sit behind a Pro-Bowler. Life was sweet, until the '08 draft washed out; that compounded the 1 or 3 misses that every team makes every year.
At the same time, the defense got old/chronically injured at critical positions. Now the issue is pressed. Now you HAVE to take a chance that guys like Worilds, Carter, Robinson, Rolle, C. Allen, Curtis Brown get it enough to keep up and compete.
