As a DC, Tomlin ran a traditional 4-3, cover 2 defense. It's not much of a reach to speculate that he may have a preference for that. I don't think Butler is a sure thing. Tomlin may want to go back to his roots on the defensive side of the ball.

LOL. He also is a mouth guy and he also is the most losing coach since 2012 in the league. Plus I think with a guy like him you're always gonna be wondering whether or not he's gonna be leaving for "greener pastures" or whatever too. Although Butler might do really good and we could have the same problem for him too. I just don't like Rex Ryan at all.

He was DC for one season. Now he's been hc of a team with a 3-4 defense for 8 years.

I take no pleasure in this. I'll always love LeBeau and remember his best years fondly. I wish him all the luck in whatever he pursues in his future. But we needed a change. Let's hope we get the right guy to take his place.

With DL leaving it's almost certain that Troy James and Ike will not be back next year

Dude is getting looks as a head coach. No way he comes here to be DC when the talent he currently has is far superior to ours.

What about Keisel and Worilds? I could see them both being gone as well but I think Kiesel has a year left right?

Look up that show I was talking about and see if you can find it. I can't find it but some of you more "savvy" folks have a nose for the obscure a lot more than me. I promise it said that. That's why I've always said that.

We should be talking about the Broncos Steelers game not coaches being forced out , the off-season sucks

Even though I was crying for this for years it was no great pleasure to see it come across my iPhone. It was rather sad. But we all know it was time and I hope he does stick around in some capacity.

His defense in Green Bay gets shredded every week. No different than ours. If it wasn't for Rogers they would be a lost cause. IMO.

Doesn't mean that's his preference. He cut his teeth in Tampa under Tony Dungy as a Tampa 2 DB coach. He took that defensive scheme with him to Minnesota as the DC there. When he came to Pittsburgh, he had no choice but to defer to the "great Dick LeBeau". I'm not saying that he plans to convert the D to a 4-3, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

The only way it's not out of the realm of possibility is if you want to lose for the next 3 years. Two at a minimum. Tomlin isn't stupid and he's not going to make a drastic change like that now. If we were going to switch we would have started doing so 3 seasons ago.

My Dad & I were talking about this earlier & he said that he wanted Dick to stay around. If he was only coming back for a year or so, then it's probably best he hand over the reigns. There's a good chance that we're gonna work on the Defense more than the Offense this offseason & I heard it takes 3 years to learn LeBeau's Defense. No sense in bringing new guys in to try to learn this complex Defense for a year- then have a different DC come in & change things.
For me, Dick's coaching wasn't the problem whatsoever- it was lack of talent on the defense. If you don't have the talent, or players aren't playing to their potential, no DC will be able to do anything.
I don't know for sure, but there is a chance that Troy may retire and James (given the chance) may leave/retire. I know Troy ain't what he used to be- but he still makes plays & he provides experience. So I want him & James to stay.
I don't know if getting rid of Dick will be a good idea. Another DC may be what the Defense needs. But then it may make things worse. Time will tell.

Absolutely not. The DC is the DC. It would be a nightmare if the old DC was hanging around to act like a think tank and run practices. A team can't function like that

Thats a crying shame, he was forced out, very rare that you get to choose your exit but was hoping he'd be the one to make the decision. He had more left in the tank and I think he would have had this defense performing at a high level again. I'd like to think it has more to do with the gentleman's agreement with Butler and not their loss of faith in him and I'd actually be ok with that, that's a business decision, that's protecting your future. Now we'll get to see if all the speculation about Butler taking over is true.

Thanks for everything coach, best damn DC in football.

    To Dick LeBeau, cheers :drinks:

I don't think he'll make the switch. Shoot, I don't even want him to make the switch. I like the 3-4. It is somewhat speculative as you pointed out, BUT teams do switch defensive schemes at times. The Steelers have a lot of young players on defense and you could argue either way whether or not now would or wouldn't be a good time to convert. The Steelers converted to a ZB scheme on offense so change does occur. Stay tuned. A lot depends on who the next DC is.

This is bitter sweet news for me. I was strongly in the camp that wanted him to retire, but I hate the thought of him having been asked to resign. I think we need scheme tweaking for a number of reasons that I won't restate here yet again. I don't think we need a wholesale redo of the base 34 zone blitz defense. I honestly don't know enough about Butler to have a feel for whether he will do what's needed to both make it easier to learn for our youngsters, and less predictable for opposing OCs and QBs. But IMO that's what's needed. More aggression. More simple reads for our youngsters. Less telegraphing exactly who's rushing to the opponent.

I dont one envision a full shift to a 43, and don't think we need to go that direction. However I don't think our personnel are nearly as far from 43 personnel as some others do.

Switching an offensive blocking scheme and switching defensive schemes aren't even in the same galaxy. Try comparing apples to apples.

So would you also say that the reason DL was successful is because he had a roster full of Pro-Bowl caliber players? I think you have to assign blame if you're going to give credit.

Do you think at some point we switch it up? I hope not but I won't be surprised if it happens in a few years.

The point is teams make changes. Didn't the Cowboys switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 a few years back? Your comment to BFT earlier when he mentioned that as a possibility was that it was just speculation on his part. That's true, it was speculation but given Tomlin's coaching foundation in the NFL it's educated speculation and not as far fetched as you might think.
