My understanding is he isn't UFA until mid March. They can tag him before then beginning Feb 21st.

    Yes

But once tagged you can’t trade him

    That I believe was the OP’s suggestion/question

Gotcha. So they have to tag, trade, or sign him between Feb 21st and mid March, right?

They could only trade him if the signed him first

My gut feel is he won’t sign unless he has a no trade clause

    Otherwise why sign

Yeah, but unlike Leveon, Lamar got paid for all those games he sat out with his "Injury" last year. Sign the Franchise Tag and then say you are injured until they trade you.

The order is they Franchise Tag him, He signs the signs the 1-year contract and then they trade him to a new team. The new team gets his full 1 year franchise contract, and Baltimore is out nothing except a problem of a QB.

Thats true, but there seems to be a consensus that there is a way around that...at least the talking crackheads on sports radio lol. There is the non-exclusive tag where )if he signs) he can talk with other teams, then the Ravens have a right to match or get 2 first rounders. At this point, after getting no where in 2 years I would just take that approach. I get the player might feel offended, but just remind him its business. If someone is willing to give 250 guaranteed then good luck, take the picks and start a new strategy. I get Lamar is unique, but the risk of injury is so much greater for him, thats nearly a quarter of the cap for 5 years with no outs.

    No

You can’t trade a player once they sign the tag

Report reveals Ravens' stance on possible Lamar Jackson trade (msn.com)

Thats a bundle right there, lmao. So I just checked, if you franchise him and he does not sign you can't trade him, if he signs the tender you can trade him. So I do not really get the advantage of the exclusive tag over the non-exclusive in this, except the team controls the tag and can command whatever they can get for him and the player has to play for that team a year, unless he can work out a deal.

The way the Ravens were talking they want to get it done, but then again talk is cheap. All Lamar can do is talk, not sign and sit, or sign and ask for a trade or just play out the year. The tag amount is 45 million.

Harbaugh pointed out that there is a 200% chance Lamar is a Raven for a long time

200% chance is quite a lot.

Yeah i'm still trying to work out the percentages in my mind. Pretty sure it means there's a good chance Lamar might not be back.

Did the rules just recently change?

NFL: 5 franchise tagged players most likely to get traded (withthefirstpick.com)
Tag and Trade” has become an increasingly popular strategy for teams in recent years. Who are the top candidates to change NFL teams via the tag and trade method in 2020?
More and more teams have started to use the “Tag and Trade” method in recent years to get compensation for some of their more talented free agents. That means they use the franchise tag to retain a player before turning around and trading them so as to not give out large contracts. Jadeveon Clowney, Dee Ford, and Frank Clark are all players that changed teams in 2019 via this method of team building.

I believe the player has to sign the tender in order to be traded. Thats why the Steelers could never move Bell, he wouldnt sign.

This. What would most likely need to happen is a 3-party deal between Lamar, the Ravens and the new team. That would allow a contract to be negotiated with the new team, and then Lamar would sign the tender to allow the trade and execution of his new contract to take place.

I’m starting to think what I found might be out of date inaccurate or poorly worded

Although I don’t see Lamar signing the tag he wants big guaranteed money

In which case he can’t be traded

They could tag him and he could show up in week 10 and still get credit for the year.

Yes and they could tag him again

But he wants a big fat guaranteed contract so I really don’t see either side taking that approach

He would sign his franchise tender to allow a trade if/when he has agreement on a long term contract with the new team and the teams have agreement on trade. Ravens could use non-exclusive tag (most common) which allows them to match another contract or receive the 2 first rounders.
