It will be already scary given the fact that Ben playing after coming back from injury is not very good.

Nice pic Spartacus - Black (hair) and Gold (gazonkers). Just like the typical Steeler girl next door. ;)

Going to be scary no matter what. If you think LOLandry was going to pull a Nick Foles for us, you might want to examine your life choices. ;)

All kidding aside, this was a move for the future.

Roethlisberger is a Hall of Fame quarterback. Those two present zero threat to his starting job. They are options for after he is done.

That is exactly the point. If he misses a few games, Jones would have presented the Steelers with their best chance to win those games.

    I think you’re right, mac.

It reminds me a bit of when we signed Haden, and we had to drop either Cockerill or Sensabaugh. Cockerill was in his last year of contract and, while the better corner, the difference in talent wasn’t big enough to keep him around.

I agree also. With that said, I think the Steelers made the right choice. Dobbs can get more reps at practice. Give the kid a chance to show he can do it.

It's a gamble initiatlly, but I think Dobbs can get the job done. Hopefully we won't have to see him out there this year.

I agree I like the move as well getting rid of Jones and keeping both Dobbs and Rudolph. Both can push each other at practice and both can continue to get better as the season moves on. If Ben goes down a game or two which I hope does not happen I have just as much faith in either Dobbs or Rudolph to step in and play well enough to win a game or two as opposed to Landry Jones.

With Jones no longer on the roster, the Steelers are counting on second-year pro Josh Dobbs and rookie Mason Rudolph, the team's third-round pick.

Pittsburgh is taking a calculated gamble by leaning on youth over experience, as Jones was a capable fill whenever Roethlisberger missed time. Since joining the Steelers in 2013 as a fourth-round pick, Jones has appeared in 19 games with five starts.

Dobbs and mason will learn and like every other NFL player including Ben, you have to start somewhere. Hopefully we can get some good leads and these two can get on the field.

You and I and everyone with a rationale mind should realize that however human being are seldom rationale so it really comes down to what Ben believes. Even if there is zero truth to it, if he thinks there is a chance it will drive some of thought processes.

So...the backup QB typically has started one game and came on in relief in three others. Ben’s older and slower to heal, but he’s also taking far fewer big hits than in his early years. Absent some freak hit, I think Ben plays a higher percentage of snaps this season, and we call on his backup less than in the past.

No one is talking about taking a HOF QB off the field for a couple of rookies this season, thats ridiculous but Ben was clearly rattled by drafting Mason.

He knows the Steelers are looking for a replacement for him, which means he needs to play at the top of his game, be the absolute best he can be or he'll open the door for one of these guys. Ben wants to play 3-5 more years. He knows to get that next contract he can't be showing signs of slowing down.

Thats the kind of pressure he is feeling, the kind of pressure that wouldnt be there if the Steelers didnt just spend a draft pick on a guy they believe had a first rd grade. What, you think Ben came into camp looking the way he does and having one of his best camps ever because he suddenly got the urge too?

Drafting Mason was a great move, a possible successor to Ben and lit a fire under his ass.

my thoughts exactly, to the outside observer, Mason and Dobbs are not a threat. To Ben, inside his head, its probably a different story. Draft MR and he comes into camp the best shape of his career. Ben's always been an insecure guy imo. He ain't sweating it legitimately but LOLJones was just like the blanket to Linus on Peanuts.

I truly believed they would have kept Jones, due to him being an established vet with real time experience. And that does count when you are trying to win a few games to stay in contention if Ben goes down. But I do applaud the move, MT's coach speak about the 4th game having weight in decisions was a good call. Nice to see them back up his words for a change.

I wasn't absolutely sure about the trade value of some of these guys. It would be interesting to see who had the same agent and if those were the qbs being rumored around the media as having been on the trading block.

Former and current qb coach and new OC cuts Jones and keeps Dobbs. I have to trust that for now

Great point on Fichtner....although this offense will probably have some Haley left in it. At the same time Fichtner will be slowly putting his own stamp on this offense with input from Ben. His vision for this O may fit more with what we have in Dobbs and Rudolph. More RPOs ,designed roll outs and other variations to get mobile QBs out in space. While in the beginning I was pretty sure we were gonna keep LJ based on the idea that he would give us the best chance to win a couple games. The more I thought about it I realized it was a false assumption because he never proved he could beat anyone but Cleveland. We still may be taking a risk but at this point the risk of losing Dobbs would be just as big, especially considering Jones is in his final season anyway. I can't help but go back to the fact that we brought in Vick and all the controversy that went with it to play over LJ . To me that shows you all you need to know about LJ....

I think Dobbs with his mobility can do fine for a game or two. Landry was a disaster waiting to happen every time he sat back in the pocket. If our offensive line did not protect him perfectly he was not going to have success.

The future is now for this team to get to the SB, we dont have a waiting period for these raw guys to develop if ben goes down....

I'm wholly convinced you just want to argue.

All I was saying .. Again!!... Is Landry is a serviceable NFL backup who has Proven just that!!! Both Dobbs & Mason has no idea what it is like playing in reg season games against starting defensers running defenses designed to confuse , attack and destroy.

Like it or Not and believe what you want..... We're chasing ring #7 and if Ben is he's usual self he'll miss some time and Landry was the best option we had.

I just don’t feel like the falloff at this point is that much from Landry to Rudolph and Dobbs and I believe they’ll only get better with more time and practice. On the other hand I believe we’ve seen the best of Landry.
Now this is just my opinion.

As far as the arguing part. It’s hard not to comment when your sole argument is that Landry can win meaningful games yet once again all of his wins came against the Browns.
As I said he was easily replaceable and he was.

The starts that he won were against the Browns. He came into other games. Plus taking the Patriots to the wire.

That said, I agree with your point. Even though I’ve defended Jones here on many occasions, the combination of comparative talent and the contract issue makes this the right call by the Steelers.

Like it or not, as long as Brady plays a whole season there's a very good chance we aren't going to the SB.
