thats one person i dont think has been mentioned much at all this season. i believe it was 3 or 4 years ago when the defense was really bad and everyone was calling for his firing.

now hardly anyone mentions him. the defense is really good and talented so i dont know if its the talent or the d- scheme or a mixture of both. but its wierd how good his defense is and you donr ever here him mentioned for a head coaching job or even a d-coordinator with another team for more money.

the one we do hear alot about and with good reason is coach fuchtner. fuch fuchtner and his offensive game plan. we should hire big ben a o-coordinator once hes retired.

Some say Butler may retire, as he is 65.

Butler was quite the whipping boy by fans. But, he has had a talented bunch the last 2 seasons, it be better if not for injuries this season.

All of us get on coaching, but it's more about having great players and not just average ones.

so do you think its the scheme or the talent or a combo. because he is not getting any accolades at all for having the number 2 ranked defense?

Not sure Butler is the loan driving force as coach of the defense. He was given more responsibility when they handed him back LB coaching duties which coincided with Buds breakout season. It would be pretty amazing if he was able to handle those duties AND improve the defense as much as it did.

If you remember, there was reports about Tomlin getting more involved with the defense and then there was also the hire of Austin. I think there is more of a committee approach on the defensive side of the ball.

Of course, Buds accession and also acquiring Minkah probably has the most to do with it along with Bush continued growth in year two. Now no Bush, no Bud, Spillane who filled in nicely getting hurt and the defense not playing as strong as it was. Scheme will only go so far without the pieces to make it run.

The scheme is decent ,but we give up to many 3rd. and longs ..We have great talent as we have 1 of the Strongest DL'S in the NFL.. Haden allows us to play some man/zone concepts and Minkah is great as a Robber if we can get him free....

The D still needs to be able to play more man and the D needs to be able to play Single High esp on 3rd. and long...IMO we need to keep Haden and move Edmunds to LB a guy I think could play the Single High at a great level is Andre Cisco from Syracuse..This would allow us to get Minkah in the box more and make this D even more dangerous..

So I think we should take Cisco in round #1 and a CB in round #2 and keep Haden ,,Havent looked at CB to much yet , but Cisco can be a Franchise Single High guy ...

I guess its damned if you do or don't. The addition of Nelson and Minkah last year along with an improving Bud and Eli made the D last year look very good, especially with an O that just crumbled. This year in spite of the injuries this D has still been very good. During the recent slide I know some have complained about 'same old D' and Butler sucks, but I wonder how many D's in the league would perform any better with the key losses we have endured, including 3/4 of the LB's, then even the loss of 2 key back up LB's. During the losses the O was putrid and the D was on the field for way to many snaps.

I have no confidence in this team drafting DB’s. I’d rather they keep acquiring them via trades or the FA route to fill those rolls. Which, admittedly, will be tough to do with their current cap situation.

It would be wrong to say this defense sucked this season but there has definitely been a noticeable drop off with all the injuries.

Yep because they never draft the right kind of DB ..I hope they see the need to play Single High if so then only 3 of those guys available ..I hope the Team realizes we need to be able to play more man..If so then draft a bigger ,faster CB who excells in man coverage ..I think the Steelers biggest problems in drafting DB''S is they want jack of all trade guys and they pass on guys who excell at certain areas.. If they take Cisco in the 1st. it will be a hit on a DB dont wait till the 3rd and take Cisco Light as he will not be able to play the Single High at a high enough level..

I do not want Minkah in the box more, because of his tackling skills and a greater chance of injury.

If they take a DB in the first, not saying it isn't needed, their offense will still be average at best.

In the box as a Robber meaning as more of a stop the quick pass stuff and to play the short zones and match up in man vs. scat RB'S and pass catching TE'S.. He would not be the force guy in run game rather would have contain be asked to slow guys up so the persuit can come...We ran a D like this and the Robber would play 8 to 10 deep in the middle right behind the LB'S the Deep FS would really be deep like 20 yards in the middle of the field...Edmunds would be the box force guy from a LB spot giving the D a better coverage guy at LB as well...

Probably , but if we get a new OC maybe we can run the ball better maybe we can use PA more maybe we can actually fool Defenses from time to time... With a strong Defense it would give us time to rebuild the Offense and a new Offensive scheme is a must IMO...

    Why has Keith Butlers Defenses been so good the last two seasons?! A far more simple answer than one realizes. As opposed to me explaining why though, Brett Kollmann does a far better job than I ever would;

It is not a coincidence that Pittsburgh just magically better in the span of two seasons. The reason Pittsburgh's Defense is finally dominant again is because of this man. Without Minkah, I seriously doubt this team had any shot to get into the playoffs in 2019.

Heck, the Steelers might not have started 11-0 even with Big Ben back!!!

You know it would not be an appropriate discussion about the Defense if the Single High Safety was not discussed by PWP!! :lolol:

Here read this look down at the Cover 1 Robber it eliminates crossing routes .Coach T just stated all Teams are using the short passing game so being able to run Cover 1 is very Important not sure why you not understand you seem like a reasonably intelligent guy..

On this message board, the less you hear of someone (a coach especially).usually means they're doing a fairly decent job. Don't jinx him.

For some reason it not paste the link , but it explains Cover 1 in detail and shows how Seattle used it to stop the great Manning...

Problem with 2 much man is .....having a guy like L. Jackson in your division. Don't want your back turned on a big time running QB. We only really started running more man because of NE...and Brady. Most teams that have done well against L. Jackson have run alot of Zone. Just my 2 cents.

Lets be honest, the gap between the worst coach in the NFL and the best coach isn't that big. Both the best and worst coach understand everything to do with football. Give a bad coach the best players ever and he'll have great success. Give the best coach ****ty players and he's going to struggle.

So yes, if Keith Butler were to suck, giving him better players will obviously result in more success, and that's exactly what I believe has happened. We have some serious talent on this team, especially on defence. I still hate our soft zone coverage I see so much of. When our D is facing a 3rd and long, we seem to play 10 yards off. I have no confidence in this team to stop 3rd and long, which is all on the coaching/scheme.

I don't like either Butler or Fitchner. I think both need to be replaced

Thats a good and true assesment ..The Cover 1 Robber is a man/zone concept. The Robber press puts the CB'S in man the Deep Safety has the deep whole of course the LB'S and the Robber have the short zones you can adapt this easily to make the Robber the Spy... The weakness in this D is the deep ball on the sidelines with Verticals..If you have a good rush and good CB play this D will stop almost all the short game stuff even the QB run because it gives you another player to help contain the QB in turn you can expand your blitz package and stunts up front to be more disruptive and bring more heat ...

But back to your point , if you run straight man on a running QB the OC will simply call the zone read and run verticals..The zone read is designed to read the fillers in the zone and attack the weakness if in man verticals makes a natural running lane for the QB the only man to stop him is the DE because the LB has the dive RB and no Safety or CB is playing force..So again against a running QB you have to play some sort of man/zone or zone concept..

I understand just fine. I might even agree sometimes, but you have a tendency to get on something and not get off of it ever. We’ve heard this same thing from you year after year forever. Much like when you get a player you like and predict ridiculous unobtainable goals for them and won’t back off of it.
