He is acting the way his team's leaders acted. I was told that overpaying Watt was valuable because of what he brings to the locker room. Now we are seeing that influence in action.

Failing to value the position properly is stupid, especially when Porter is by far their best defensive player under age 28.

Why is it so many sports fans carry around so much resentment toward athletes?

There are people that say FU to their employers after winning a $3M lottery.
All depends on how you want to live. "Things" don't interest me as much as "experiences".

This is tragic. I think I said this upthread, but I remember some interview (I think with someone on the Raptors) that talked about how most NBA players don't save anything from their first contract. It's just so unfortunate. Because it shouldn't be all that hard when you have that kind of income. But I'm sure part of the mentality that makes it so you're willing to even try to do the impossible thing of becoming a pro athlete means you take huge risks and don't think about the future.

It being the mothers makes this story even worse IMO.

In some ways a guy like Harrison can probably really help support lots of people because he made it big (although didn't have the career longevity of a lot of people).

But there are probably lots of guys who have the initial part of Harrison's career where he's bouncing between PSs or whatever. And everything feels like they "made it".

Because they act like petulant little brats who are often narcissistic and self entitled and yes they do put their bodies on the line but what they do for a living is way out of line with what they get paid. Don’t feed me the line of “Well it’s what the market pays and they bring in a lot of revenue for the sport and the team”. Would you equate what they do as important as what a soldier does or a policeman or a fireman?

That’s debatable on whether he is their best defensive player under 28. How old is Herbig? I never agreed with paying Watt what we paif\d him at least on this last contract. By the way the defense under Tomlin was built around the edge and the pass rush so it at least makes a little more sense from the teams perspective.

It isn't their fault that our society overpays athletes.

I don't know who was saying that about Watt but my old board had plenty of posters saying trade Watt, not worth it.

Should we also believe the story that no team has offered the Steelers a trade for JPJ? Are they undervaluing him as well?

Relax it's Friday, Dulac said the deal would be made today. How can anyone doubt Dulac?

    I'd easily be able to live a great life on $3mm. That's ~ $120k / year.

Which is more than my salary. Which is enough to support a family of 5, all three kids still under 18 and dependent, and save a significant portion of my income. We live in what I would have called a mCOL city with very high taxes. Although post-covid I'm not sure if there are any mCOL cities left.

Plus that $120k / year (which I'd only start drawing down on after 12 months) would be long term capital gains, so my take home would be higher.

I like experiences over things too.

And in the example in the post you quoted, the comment was that $30MM wasn't FU money. Someone who can't live very comfortably spending "only" $1.2mm/year basically in perpetuity (maybe throttle down to $0.9-1.0/year in very bad economic times*), is doing something very, very wrong IMO.

Edited to add * That $900k/year for bad economic times in this example (3% withdrawal rate) is too conservative. Seems like even in very long time horizons with bad sequence of returns a 3.5% withdrawal rate ($1.05mm) is the lowest you'd ever really need to go. Maybe an athlete want's to be conservative and have a bigger buffer for massive medical expenses though. I'd probably just set $1MM of my $30MM aside in this case. Then do something like 3.75% / year (~$1.1mm/year) for the first decade or so. In most timelines my simple portfolio (~ 75% SP500, 25% US bonds) would probably be up something like 30-50% despite the withdrawals at that point. So I'd reassess my withdrawal strategy at that point. If I was in a ****ty timeline and my portfolio balance went down in the first decade, I probably would have ratcheted down the spending when I saw that happening. But I'd certainly catch it at the decade mark. Then reassess. And probably have a very good next decade (because sequence of returns isn't a random number generator like a monte-carlo simulation).

    I called Friday too.

Was sad when I heard that Dulac was predicting Friday too. Because it virtually guaranteed that I'd be wrong.

I'd much rather sign him, even if its 100% Joey's demands.

But man, if they can't sign him, we need to trade him. I just don't see the point in Franchise Tagging him in 27 & 28 only to get a Comp pick in the 2030 draft. I see it better to get a 2nd and a 5th for him today than a comp pick down the road. Steelers would surely get more in return than what I stated, but that's the point that the worst possible return is better than a comp pick. Maximize the return and avoid locker room nonsense, that's already starting.

But a little friggin gratitude and not being so damn entitled and greedy would go a long way. The way Joey is acting all disappointed etc. it is disgusting when you look at the big picture. He is damn fortunate no matter how you slice it. It’s the very reason why each year I dislike professional sports more and more. Who the hell do these guys think they are? They are going down the same route as Hollywood. People are tired of it. The MLB and NBA are even worse. I can’t stand to watch those sports. I absolutely cringe when the younger generation is enamored or looks up to these people. It’s getting worse too with the NIL there level entitlement starts even earlier now. College sports is destroyed now. No innocence left. Even Highschool sports are now impacted.

‘you know who o respect. Caitlyn Clark. She is playing for the love of the game and making an honest living all while getting her ass kicked by opposing players as she keeps the league afloat. Joey Porter Jr. character wise can’t hold a candle to her.

I’m not trading him for anything less than what the Jets got for Sauce Gardner. A first and then some.

So if nobody offers your asking price, the Franchise Tag for two seasons and a 2030 3rd Rd comp pick is the better option?

Your point on living off 1 million a year in perpetuity is exactly my point. This is why these guys disgust me. If they invest it right with compounding interest they can earn a lot more and spend more per year as well in the future. In my mind they just don’t deserve this kind of money and when they hold out and say they need to feed their family it’s very insulting. Our Society is screwed up to be paying these and entertainers this kind of money. At least Hollywood is crumbling as AI will destroy that industry and thank goodness. So sick of their righteous attitudes telling us how to live and believe.

The sad thing in all of this is if it is over garunteed money the Rooney may not do a third year gauruntee contractually but on many occasions with players they respected and who were fair with them they paid those guys their salary in the third or fourth year of their contract when the player got hurt. They honored the contract even though they didn’t have too. I think the Rooney really take offense to players who act like Joey in particular - holding out, faking injury etc. the way he went about it matters to the Rooney I believe that is why they said they aren’t going t0 negotiate until he starts practicing.

That is t the only o-tik. You can trade him next year or sing him to a long term deal next year. Or get a year out of him and if he plays well -Arlan that into a first round pick and more or if he doesn’t play well or average then that 3rd round pick won’t look so bad in Two years.

But if he is as good as he thinks he is and everyone seems to think that the. Why would you ever accept a 2nd round pick es[ecoally at his age on a second contract in the prime of his career.

The thing for me is waiting until next summer or the following summer to sign him to an extension(assuming the tag him), will most likely result in a larger contract than if they signed him today. The market is only going to increase. I'd rather trade him now and maximize the return. Getting a Sauce like return is definitely ideal, I just can't see it being what 937 discussed earlier today.

The Academy Award for best actor goes to Joey Porter Jr. if he doesn't play because of that fake back injury.

    Agree on the 1st paragraph.

Re the 2nd paragraph, I think the issue is that the Steelers have tried very hard not to give fully guaranteed money in the 2nd year of a contract. At first it was only Ben. Then TJ (multiple 1st APs at the time). Then Minkah (also multiple AP1s IIRC). But last year DK (no AP1s, but PBs).

Now likely Porter pushing for fully guaranteed 2nd year (which I'd imagine both Gonzales and Witherspoon got).

Under truth serum, I bet Rooney would say that he thinks the 2nd year money should be guaranteed. I'd imagine that the Steelers always argue that the 2nd year is "all but" guaranteed when you look at what they actually do. Who's the last moderate to big name player we cut after year 1?

I think the reason that we don't want to put "real" fully guaranteed money into 2nd years on contracts is a CBA / NFL accounting thing. My understanding is that guaranteed money on contracts has to go into an escrow account the day the contract is signed. And while Rooney is rich by any reasonable definition of the word, he's not Robert Kraft rich. So I think it's hard for the Steelers to put that much cash in a savings account doing nothing for a year.

You can see this in the three teams that really don't like doing 2nd year guarantees. All of them are kind of "cash poor" by NFL standards. Bengals, Packers, and Steelers.

If the CBA changed to make it so that less (or no) money from the 2nd year went into escrow, I all three of these teams would start offering 2nd year guarantees.

This rule hurts smaller market teams.

That makes a lot of sense. The Steelers are at an extreme disadvantage then. How can they not complain to the Commisioner about this and make so all the teams are in the same boat regarding this?
