Disagree...and obviously the Steelers did too. Bell was about the money.

A notable case involved former NFLPA president JC Tretter, who suggested that players could use fake injuries to avoid practices or games. The league filed a grievance against the NFLPA, and an arbitrator ruled that encouraging players to fake injuries violated the collective bargaining agreement, though no individual players were accused of faking injuries. This highlights the league’s focus on preventing institutional encouragement of deceptive behavior rather than solely policing individual acts.

That very well may have happened had he been given a long term contract with the fully guaranteed money he was seeking. The pressure to perform to secure his payday would have been off of him. During the year off he still had the incentive to stay in shape to get paid, and didn’t do it.

The problem with sitting out on a tag is you don't get money and you get 1 year older. Also unless Bell was washed before the whole holdout, you might just lose the pizzazz that made you elite to begin with.

At this point, I'd just sit in on franchising him. Trade him if the price is right. The commanders have rumors of giving a 1st. I'd do that in a heartbeat as they may be picking top 10 and we still need a franchise QB

Or you could just look at his performance in his last year and see if was worse (by a fair amount) than his other seasons with us.

Because we ran the wheels off him. And he broke many times. And that takes a toll.

But I get why you'd rather call people names than try to use data to persuade them. Because there is no evidence to support your claim.

What we gained was not having a **** contact for a player who was declining (while Ben was among the highest cap hits in the league).

The other thing we know is that he had an epic decline in real life. You can make whatever excuses you want, but that's what actually happened.

We wanted to pay him lots of money, before the RB market collapsed (in part because of the deal Bell signed with the Jets).

But he didn't sign it because he wanted to be paid like a top tier RB and a 2nd tier WR. And have a lot of it guaranteed apparently (did he know his body was failing? ).

I've never been against Bell or anyone else trying to get as much as they can. It's not a moral failing. I think it's what basically all of us would do. Especially at RB which chews guys up.

But it's very clear that his demands were unreasonable. And my guess is that the way he played the negotiations left him with less money than if he just sign the overpayment we offered him.

This ignores the biggest weakness last year, which was safety. Brisker can't play both spots.

He was, but taking a year off has a huge effect on anybody. Remember, he was not nearly as explosive as a rookie as he was at his peak. That is because he lost weight and got into amazing shape. Maybe he does that anyway after getting paid, but there were many other variables. It wasn't just the season away from the game. it was the massive downgrade in coaching and offensive talent around him, too.

Thanks for watching college ball and sharing what you see.

I really appreciate knowing what's going on in the NCAA player wise even though I have little to no desire to watch college football.

If you are sitting out in order to sign a market setting contract you would think a smart player would sign up with a trainer and keep himself in top shape.

But his plan worked I suppose. Got an extra $5M from a dysfunctional org. Had a second chance with KC but became an afterthought.

Porter Sr. factor in to the story. The Steelers cut him in 2007 when the salary cap dictated it. He later coached with the Steelers eventually let go let him go from that job too. Now he is in his son’s ear. That history matters.

Unless Art Rooney II changes his mind, the policy remains the same. The Steelers do not negotiate contracts during the season. That includes Joey Porter Jr.

This situation can go south quickly. Porter Jr. can sit. The Steelers can franchise him next spring. He can push for a trade. None of those outcomes are good if the goal is to keep him in black and gold for the next four to five years.

And frankly, I wish Porter Jr. had created more turnovers if he wants top-of-the-market money.

If he misses Week 1 and whoever replaces him plays well, the situation becomes even more complicated. A very good player taking a “pay me first” position, with a family history of difficult exits from Pittsburgh.

That combination does not tend to age well in this organization. Joey Porter jr for a 1st round 2027 pick if he does not play to his current contact?

So Porter either has a real back issue or was faking it. Neither would seem to bolster his value.

What's the solution then? What if Porter now asks to be the highest paid corner or he'll be "pissed off"? Do you appease him and pay $35M/yr? Trade him for the sake of team harmony? Stick to a slot that the team believes is more suitable for him?

We know PW he has the speed and the athleticism but it's between the ears he needs to figure out. That is the area that needs improvement.

I have been saying Porter Sr. Is a problem. Not only about what you mentioned but he was joking to coach under McArthey and it didn’t happen and I’m sure he felt the Steelers should have picked his son in the first round instead of the second. It’s now a little bit of revenge. I do think the Steelers are being unreasonable to a degree here though. I pay him 30 million a year with 2.4 years gauruntee if he doesn’t take that the. He is being unreasonable.

I would feel better knowing what JP was offered before whether or not I make a decision about who is being unreasonable.

I don't ever remember anyone saying that Bell was intelligent. This is the same doofus who got busted for a DUI and said he didn't realize you could get one for driving while high on marijuana.

If the reports of the offer they finally gave him are true, it is well below $30 million per year. No, he shouldn't be the highest-paid corner, but waiting until a week before the season and then lowballing him after handing out big deals to lesser players seems like good reason for him to be pissed.

Well I highly doubt we will ever know. I don’t like the way Porter is going about it, there are better ways.

Ok... so sitting out a year puts you behind when you come back. How many players have sat out a year because of injury then come back to play at a high level? What's the difference between sitting out a year due to injury and sitting out a year to get a new contract? Plenty of players have come back from season ending injuries to play well. So I don't get the sitting out a year as a death sentence for a career. Maybe I'm wrong

I think its probably more of a mental thing ? When you are busted up you still have some unfinished work and have a deep desire to get back to a top level..On the flip side guys who sit out feel they have already arrived and have less motivation iMO.

I am sure that's not the case in every situation , but it seems like that to me more times than not...
