I remember watching the Jax game and the clock stops when it hits 2:00, but the refs allow Jax to play on.

The previous play was 3rd and 4 and Jacksonville completes a very controversial pass. So Jax gets up to the line of scrimmage as fast as they can and snaps the ball. The announcers say that Tomlin does throw the challenge flag, but it is too late as the ball had already been snapped.

BUT, the clock actually stops at the 2-minute warning before the ball is snapped. You can actually see the clock stop for a few seconds, before they start it back up as the officials are letting them, run the play. The guy running the clock does exactly what he is supposed to do initially; let the clock run down to 2:00 and then press stop.

I don't know if you can challenge the 2-minute warning?

There it is the clock clearly says 2:00 and the ball is clearly not snapped.

Oh God, I am putting out another crazy controversial theory here... I am slowly becoming that crazy guy in the tin foil hat. :)

Interesting thought. All challenges insidec2 minutes are supposed to be only from the Ref I think. Is it 2 minutes on..or below the 2 min mark. It will take a 30 minute TV break to figure this out

I would say why not, because you can challenge the play clock.

But, the time on the TV screen can be different than the official time kept on the field, no?

Let's not give MT any more ideas on how to use challenges. His track record is not very impressive.

I'm sure that would be the league's response as well. Something about the stadium clocks not being the official time and that the war room in NY has each games official time monitored.

Agreed, but 2 be Honest....He has lost challenges I thought He should have won, and If You're Honest....I bet You agree. It's almost like they know how bad He is at challenges.....so they automatically go against it. LoL

More times than not I challenge his challenges. Most of them are head scratching.

The funnier thing is it would have been a double challenge. Bonus round time!

First the 2-minute challenge, and then Tomlin would have been allowed to challenge the 3rd and 4 play that he was originally trying to challenge when the ball was snapped.

I think it is challengeable under "Status of the game clock". Not advisable during preseason as it would likely take a while for the NFL to sort out.

WHICH PLAYS CAN A TEAM CHALLENGE?
A team may use a challenge to review these situations:

    • Possession
    • Plays involving touching of either the ball or the ground
    • Goal line plays
    • Plays at the sidelines, line of scrimmage and line to gain
    • Number of players on the field at the snap, even when a foul is not called
    • Game administration:
      • Penalty enforcement
      • Proper down
      • Spot of a foul
      • Status of the game clock
      • Disqualification of a player
