This is the quagmire. Bens good enough to get us close on a yearly basis and simultaneously capable of playing so horribly that he can absolutely destroy us.

Ben does anything he wants to do on the field and knows he wont be held accountable for having a bad game, the truth is he would be a better quarterback if he had a head coach that would rip him when he is playing poorly, like bill parcells used to light a fire under phil sims ass when he made bad plays on the field, Ben needs to feel pressure to play his best to avoid some of these stupid plays he makes, so I think he is too comfortable in the knowledge that no matter how bad he plays he still gets patted on the back by haley and tomlin........

The same place they'd be in the last five years - no playoff wins. That's the sad part - they've got a franchise HOF QB and they haven't won a playoff game in 5 years. So how much does it help having him? They'd suck without him no doubt.

I disagree. Ben plays like **** when he feels the pressure.

I don't think either of them succeeds without the other. They didn't beat the Rams due to Brady alone. Brady is great, but he executes the game plan Belicheck draws up perfectly. How often does he throw it 4 yards then the receiver takes it all the way. I don't think if they didn't come together, that either one of them would be more than just better than average.

Brady's had a better line for most of it though. To me, it all starts with the OL. Aikman makes that point more than anyone. Bad OL 1-15. Good OL, 3 SB titles.

I agree, he's not helping much as far as getting to the playoffs but can you imagine how bad this team would be without him? With the defense Tomlin has built, we would rival the suckland stains at staying at the bottom.

They would be pretty back (or would they). I mean, they were 2-2 without Ben (and played without him in the Rams game too). They didn't lose to the Ravens the first time because of the QB. I don't think they'd be a SB contender (are they now?). Even if they didn't have Ben - they'd have more money and better draft picks to address their holes - so maybe they are the mid to late 90s Steelers (which weren't any worse than what they've been the last 5 years).

Also, the team doesn't even feel Ben is the MVP on the team.

This is the consistent double standard... the best offense of the Big Ben era, was built by Tomlin.

    Consistent double standard noted.
Everything good about the Steelers CANNOT be attributed to the head coach
Everything bad about the Steelers MUST be attributed to the head coach.

Dont mind Jack, hes a Haley homer, he correctly surmised that the Steelers would hire him as OC before anyone else.

Its his moment in the sun :lolol:

No issues with Haley. He's been a very very good OC. Really helped take Ben to the next level.

Like any OC/Coach, I have my criticisms when we get to a specific situation, playcall... previous frustrations with red zone (Haley and Ben), but significantly improved this year with running game. But overall, I am very happy with the Haley hire, Munchak hire, and everything Tomlin and Co. have done with the offense the last few years.

Well "obviously " they probably make each other, but it's Bellichick who comes up with a game plan every week to maximize his personnel on both sides of the ball. What makes Brady great is his smarts and his ability to stick to the plan and not get too greedy and throw it quickly, accurately to the open man.

Actually, no, he didn't. He missed Moss badly on several throws in that SB loss. And I mean BADLY.

Are any of the 32 NFL head coaches not playing to both get to and win the Superbowl?

Most of them are not. The teams in the running every year now are New England, Green Bay, Seattle, and Denver.

Then there are teams like the Steelers, Bengals, Cardinals, and Texans who are on the fringe and really a playoff win would be a great result.

Maybe another team gets lucky but it's pretty hard for teams like the Lions and Beowns to say they play for Super bowls when they haven't been in 50 years.

Not to mention coaches simply refuse to answer. They are allowed to pick and choose those they wish to answer. I have seen Tomlin evade questions before . I believe this is where all of the Tomlinisims come from. lol

Plus, reporters who ask difficult questions aren't going to get many more chances to ask them again.

Post-game press conferences are about journalists getting stories to sell copy. They're not in-depth breakdowns of the game. I've always thought tht Tomlin gets that, gives them something to print, and moves on.

This says it all: Whitlock is right that Tomlin is getting too comfortable in his situation and it is because no one is holding him accountable for his actions.

Have they ever put his feet to the fire on anything or is it always mostly just fluff? You're right though that most "journalists" in sports media are just looking for "bulletin board" material to sell papers. It would be refreshing though to hear a reporter say "Do you honestly believe that Antwon Blake is the best we can do?" "Can you explain why we go away from what is working so early and so often?" "Can you explain why we consider certain guys good enough to trade picks for them only to make them ride the pine behind the leader of missed tackles and big plays in the entire league?" "Do you consider cornerback a position of importance in today's NFL?" I mean those are literally pertinent and relevant questions that could be asked respectfully. Those are the kinds of things I'd like to ask Tomlin myself but sadly he isn't returning my texts anymore...:cray:

I think they could ask those questions, but they aren't getting a question next week if they do.

But for me, I'd probably be more interested in what the answers were to those questions a few days later. Post-game pressers are always immediate reactions, and Tomlin knows how to sidestep that. Like I say, it's not the place for in-depth analysis. The problem is, the places where those questions could get asked a few days later are on places like NFL Network, where critical, probing questions are even less likely.
