I read that earlier, he's just repeating what coaches have been telling him. And even if they hadn't, I like confidence.

How many around here have been projecting him and what's the consensus around here about him?

I think there's a reasonably good chance that we take him at #17 if he's there. He would immediately give us quality snaps at a position of great need. I don't think that he's the elite prospect that some do, but if he falls to #17 he will probably be the best player available on my board at that point.

    I think there's a 75% chance he's our guy in the first.

Man I hope we don't draft Jarvis Jones...I just don't think he is a good fit here. Not to say he wouldn't be very successful somewhere else.

The guy sacks QBs and tackles RBs behind the line of scrimmage on an alarmingly frequent basis. Tell me why he wouldn't be a good fit here again???

Really don`t know much about the guy.
There is a fine line between cockiness, and confidence.
If he can back it up, then it ain`t just braggin...
We have had some issues with egotistical players lately, but we still need players that can sing it, AND bring it...
As long as he can bring it...
I say, welcome to the Steelers!
I don`t follow enough college ball enough to weigh in on our options..
It doesn`t sound like there`s a kick-ass runningback available in this draft,
So, I say let`s get the best defensive player available at pick 17. If it`s this guy, cool.
If it`s a safety, better yet...
    GO STEELERS!!!

He may very well be the Steelers #1 pick, we will need production
from this position no doubt. People we have LOTS of needs, don't let Colbert/Tomlin
BS you. These two better have an excellent draft, if not we will not be a playoff team.

Jones' skill set is very similar to Timmons, but he's actually less athletic. Timmons was 3 years into his NFL career when he was the same age as Jones now, and Timmons failed as an OLB. I actually would prefer Jones inside to outside.

If you watch tape on Jones you'll see that he had a very good defensive coordinator. He was match up against tight ends A LOT. He rarely had to go up against tackles.

Personally, I hope he said it without input from the Steeler coaches. I don't like what it implies. Of course it could be a smoke screen by the Steelers...maybe?

My guess is he's probably just going off all the media hype around him ending up here (as a lot of people are).

At running the risk of being told "I TOLD YOU SO" but everyone here (and I could handle that), I don't see us taking Jones even if he's right there for us at 17... And with the way he's running his mouth I wouldn't be shocked if someone trades up ahead of us to get him... But here's why I don't see it...

    * Jones is old. Lawrence Timmons was 3 years into his NFL career when he was Jones' age now. Would be the 2nd oldest player Colbert's ever drafted, at a position that typically takes 2-3 years for our guys to learn. Will he be 27 by the time he's ready to go?

    * Jones had a good DC at Georgia. When I've watched him I've noticed he often beats TE's for sacks. That's not the type of player we usually take for OLB. We take big DE's who are stout against the run as well as rushing the passer. I worry about Jones in coverage, and in the run game if teams run at him.

    * Building on that, he's pretty small for our OLB's. He plays faster than his measured times, but if he has to put on another 20 pounds then how will that affect his speed? I worry about him dropping back in coverage.

    * There's a good possibility the FO is willing to give Worilds, Carter, and Robinson a shot to succeed... Especially if they move Woodley over and let Worilds play in his spot.

    *Medical red flags, obviously.

Like someone said earlier, he's basing his comment on discussions with teams. I don't see that as arrogant. Now, if he had no context of demand and was just saying that based on his own confidence, it MIGHT be arrogant. Regardless, I think we need some swagger on the D side.

If Jones is there at 17 he is our man PERIOD! If he is gone I have no clue as to which way we go.

I don't think he will be our pick for the reasons SteelByDesign stated. Personally I think he is off the board before we draft. I expect us to trade down instead of picking at 17 due to the depth of the draft. The only issue is you need to find a dance partner to trade with. If there is none I expect us to go OL or TE if Eiffert is still on the board.

I think the Steelers will do what they always do....BPA. I have seen some argument that Eifert isn't an option due to Health and Spaeth and Paulson and Johnson and Johnson. To me....if he is your BPA on the board, you don't worry about those factors.

I agree he will be gone and I really think we take a WR in round one and I think that will be Patterson from UT. There is a possibility we take a CB, but there are not a lot of good ones in this draft and after the first 2 go off the boards they are all about the same, so we could wait until round 2 or 3. Sanders is no lock to return next year, so I say we bolster the WR corps just in case. Patterson is 6 foot 2 inches, so he has some height that Ben likes. Plax is old, so I say we go WR.

Yeah, I saw that quote from him the other day and at first, I kind of thought it sounded arrogant, but now I think that Blast Furnace is right in that he's just repeating what he's heard coaches say.

There's no doubt in my mind, somewhere along the way, some Steelers representative told Jarvis Jones that if he was there at #17, we would take him. Remember, for a very long time, Jones was viewed as a lock to be a Top 5 pick. Its only been in the past 2 months that this frame of mind has changed. It would be like our Oline coach going to Luke Joeckel "If you are there at #17, we will take you" kind of thing. No big deal and certainly no harm in Jones saying it. Whether it turns out to be true or not is a different story.

We re struggling at defense depth. We are going back to ground and pound. The league is doing more dink and dunk and we will follow suit, like last year. We ll be fine at WR but defense is going to need help if we continue to focus on the offense.

We need LBers. Mouthy, smash mouth playing, mean, nasty, put fear in your heart, hard hitting ole fashion steeler LBers. Bc at the moment WHO do we have?

we seem to always go best player available. if we do that and he is there its a no-brainer. he fills a need and is a stud. he is no different than any other player in this draft. they all have weaknesses. i can tell you from watching georgia alot in the sec that jones is the best defensive player i seen this year. i still say no way he makes it to 17. someone will trade up in front of us if he is still there.

I had posted a thread in March in which I questioned whether he was as good as his stats. Ultimately I think that he's likely to be my (need and scheme adjusted) BPA at #17 if he's there, not because I think he's a top 5 type of talent, but because this draft is so weak at the top at positions that we need, or that fit our scheme on defense. Here's a link to my thread.

    http://thesteelersfans.com/forums/showthread.php?6083-Jarvis-Jones-Another-Look-Not-so-Good

If we take him, I will not cheer, I will just nod and say "OK, that kind of works..." If the choice comes down to Jones or trading down via a trade that is close to the value in the trade value chart, I'm trading.

Also, in response to the suggestion that he will take 2-3 years to be mentally ready to play in our scheme. I disagree. He will be ready Day 1. This is no DE conversion prospect. he has played 2 years as an OLB in a 3-4 defense in a scheme that is similar enough to what we do that he will be comfortable. That's one of the key reasons that I rate him as a first round prospect for us.

If the Steelers feel he is healthy enough I think he could be a great pick maybe even see the field a lot this ear.
