During the AFC CHAMPIONSHIP game Tomlin was arguing with an official and the defensive play call didn’t get in to the defense in time. We gave up a TD because of this. This is not speculation because Tomlin admitted it after the game in an interview

Tomlin is the defensive coordinator no matter who they hire. He might as well find some homeless guy and give him the free 700,000 per year job.

i just think tomlin doesn't like coaches that know more then him. we had 3 former head coaches on the staff at one time. all gone. we now bring in coaches that are very new at the nfl game. keeps him looking knowledgeable. we dump coaches a lot and not usually because they are highly sought after by the rest of the league.

It’s more a control issue than ego issue. Trying to pull the rug out from under an established coach isn’t going to fly like it will with a noob.

Can you imagine how awkward it had to be for the defense when Tomlin is really a players type of guy but they also have great respect for Butler and some loyalty there as well. Its like a child of divorce

Gets worse, according to Dulac (think it was him) he said Tomlin began doing that under LeBeau. No one more respected than that guy. That sheds a little light on why maybe JH had disdain for Tomlin even before his last season here.

look at the subsequent posts we were discussing using Watt in the same role just from out of a different front. In Elvis's scheme I think I'd have Heyward, Alualu\Adams, and Tuitt with Watt then put Highsmith behind Watt as the OLB Bush in the middle and Charlton as the other OLB opposite Highsmith

Agreed, but It works for Reid mainly because of Mahomes. I just rather Tomlin get OC,and DC that He fully trust ,and let them do their jobs. He can always veto anyway. He has a whole team 2 coach, and shouldn't let everything get in His way of doing that.
I just don't understand Hiring someone I don't trust 2 do the job. That's all really.

Reid isn’t the only one. Whiz did it in Arizona when haley was his oc. Haley was the OC, but whiz made the calls.

Hmmm. I didn't know that. I still don't like it. LoL.
Seems strange. I know back in the day it was done pretty often, but I thought that was changed mostly since the 90s

Pretty sure vrabel makes the defensive calls in Tennessee. Belichek used to call them, but I think his son has taken on some of that role now. Zimmer used to make the calls in Minnesota. I say used to because he just got fired. There are more

When Lebeau was fired for having the 18th best defense with one of the worst defensive rosters in 2014 it was pretty obviously a takeover. Steelers had started playing way more cover 2 with Tomlin as coach anyways especially late in games.

Was this before or after getting Tebowed? Because if it was after I don't blame him.

The whole thing has become a clown show. We will see just how bad it is shortly. I would settle fro him cutting players that do stupid crap like claypool

The Bungles fired him after 9 games after he gave up 3 500+ yard games in a row. This should be hot garbage and leave you longing for the days of Butler. But Mike runs the defense anyway so he’ll just stand there anyway.

He might not call individual plays but the Defensive game plan is all him.

Do we really have 3-4 personnel though? Our best front 7 defenders are scheme diverse, and our LBs could potentially be better in a 4-3 front, especially moving Bush to a WLB role.

Doesn’t Watt and Highsmith need to be bigger to be true 4-3 fit?

I think the OLB's definitely fit the mold of what Pittsburgh looks for in a 3-4 linebacker but you are right some of the others are more outside of that mold like Charlton and I'd say Wormley as well so they could potentially work some diverse personnel groups

That would make a lot of sense for multiple reasons. I always got the feeling the the veterans didn’t care for Tomlin at all. And that’s on Offense and Defense.

Actually, the Steelers secondary has gotten better at creating turnovers, and Austin would be working with a more talented defense than the one he had in Cincinnati.

    This:this!:
Though I believe that is our problem. We are good at a lot of formations, but not great at any.
