From what I am reading about and hearing about this young man they are comparing his skill set to Matt Forte. I am on record right now, I will jump for joy if he can turn out as good as Matt Forte has been. It will be VERY important that we have a decent running game, hopefully this kid could be the answer.

lol pretty sure he means Matt.

I've heard that comparison as well. Although I hope he holds up better than Forte. Bell, if you go by their listed weights has about 25 pounds on Forte.

I don't see him being the homerun type of guy that Forte is, but I hope we get him involved in the passing game like Chicago does.

I don't hate the comparison, but for what it's worth Forte ran a 4.46, and Bell a 4.6. Considerable difference. And like you said, they're the same height and Bell has 20 pounds on him. I think we can expect some more broken tackles and fewer big plays.

It's all pointless if we don't get our OL blocking scheme together, and call running plays effectively. That will determine our success way, way more than however good Le'Veon Bell is.

I definitely think he is thinking of Matt Forte. Leave it to wardismvp to be thinking of someone from the 70s though :lolol:

I was critical of the Bell pick at the time, but have really come around on it. Hopefully my initial gut reaction was wrong.

Now I wont say as many but I will say plenty.

4.6 is still moving and if you look at the home run or the big 20 yard runs the guys aren't bein out run they are being pushed aside. A RB will always have to make a guy miss his tackle for the big play.
Just imagine what could happen if the guy with the most YAC in NCAA doesn't get touched till the 2nd line of defenders.

I still think we could have waited for him but love the pick.

I remember "Ike" Forte, and we already have one in Ike Redman, who is a very similar back.

Any chance you were critical not because of who the player was that we picked, but who we didn't pick? That is where I was at. It wasn't that I didn't want Bell, it was mostly about who we could have had with that same pick.

That's certainly where I was on the Bell pick. I think he has a chance to be a very productive back in our system if the line gels and stays healthy, but so could a lot of backs that went later in the draft. To me we overvalued the RB position and undervalued other key positions when we took Bell in the 2nd, and as a result we left some really good prospects for others to snatch soon after our pick.

I'm ok with the Bell pick. Curious who else or what other position you other folks would have drafted?

Also, for what it's worth, I happen to think that UDFA picks should be able to be traded.

There was a thread shortly after the draft where we played GM. http://thesteelersfans.com/forums/s...e-the-GM-What-would-you-have-done-differently

It'd be interesting to see if we still feel that way 3 months later. I like Bell. I'm sure he'll be a productive back here. I don't have a problem with him, but I've voiced my opinion on picking a RB in the upper rounds before and I'm not a big fan of it. Why spend a high pick when you can very likely get a productive back in the last couple rounds or even an UDFA? Look at the success Shanahan and Gibbs had with athletic linemen and the dart and stretch system. You don't need a feature back to be successful with that system.

I sound like I'm complaining about Bell, but I'm not. Not trying to anyway. I'm excited to see what he does this year, and I'm not unhappy about the pick. The FO liked him, and I'm sure he'll be successful.

To me the guy I wanted there was the one who ended up in Baltimore. Arther Brown I think is going to drive us crazy for the next 10 years.

we do have some later round picks and udfa's at rb and they didn't pan out all that well either. they are still here and we wanted more out of the position, hence the bell pick. he's as solid a pick as they come and he was well deserving of a 2nd round grade in this draft.

I think bell plays this year and i'm not so sure brown would have or at least play that much.

I don't believe he has missed that much time over his career, and has been highly productive, despite playing behind possibly an even poorer OL than the Steelers.

my old buddy tim spencer has put out good RB's everywhere he's been. Ohio State and Chicago. I so wanted him to come here and be our rb's coach. it makes a huge difference. has Kirby Wilson had much success really, bringing along our running game on a consistant basis?

I personally don't think Wilson is anything to write home about but I also can't decide if it's the fault of the offensive line.

his group definitely had fumble problems last year. I remember after the Cleveland game we had to go over the correct way to carry the ball. WHAT?????? shouldn't that be pretty high on the list of first things they should know?

we had the SB fumble by mendy under Kirby. all 4 rb's fumbled against the browns last year. Jerome at the goaline against the colts the year we won the SB. there's just something amiss with our rb's to me and at some point, you have to look at coaching. we finally did with ST's, WR's, DB's. just sayin, it's something to look at. carnell has sure turned around the DB's. we have 3 other positions that will have new coaches too. I think for the better.

Yeah and anytime you see a "professional" making a mistake on fundamental things you have to figure that's either laziness on his part or the coach's part for not preaching discipline. My dad played rb and he would always and still does talk about how you should carry the ball. If a guy with a high school education that was only approached by two colleges about playing football can know this how can a PRO from a MAJOR program not know this??? Also you would REALLY think our guys would wanna carry the ball right because Tomlin is such a Drill Sgt when it comes to fumbling.
