If you can get a 5th rounder for Mason, I'd trade him. Sign a vet cheap to be the No. 3 QB.

Exactly. Pickett is either #2 or may even start. What does that say if they make him the number 3 after out performing Rudolph and playing well enough to start.

Whatever the plan was for Ben has no bearing, he didn’t have a good camp and was 20 freaking years ago. No one is drafting a QB in the first rd and making him 3rd string in todays league.

Ben was QB3 that year. Then Batch was injured then Maddox was injured.

We will see what they do. But I can see a scenario where Mason is #2 on GameDay if Trubisky goes down Mason finishes the game, but if Trubisky goes out for multiple weeks, they start Kenny and Mason is still#2

I predict that offense will struggle to move with Trubinsky and it will move effortlessly with Pickett in there. Similar to when Kordell was replaced by Maddox. Pickett is just a fraction of second quicker in processing information and that is all it takes from being a completed pass to an incomplete or missing a window of opportunity to throw the ball.

In a vacuum, either Tomlin is
    1) ready to start Pickett
    2) wants Pickett to be exposed to the games some before live action
    3) not ready to play Pickett.

When you add in the other QB’s for scenario 1: Either Tomlin starts Pickett or has him at 2 because while he’s comfortable starting him he thinks MT gives the better opportunity to win now. Scenario 2: Some argue this is why on day 1 Pickett is the number 2. But I question whether this means Tomlin will make him the 3. Because there’s always the likelihood that MT goes down in the game and the desire to not play him yet is there. Scenario 3: Pickett is 3rd string.

Having said that, IMHO, it’s Tomlin’s evaluation and determination for Pickett that determines if Landry, I mean Mason is the 2 or 3.

Why do that Landry Jones, and Mason are not even close 2 the same Qb. Not in the NFL....Not in College.

Perhaps. Yet if they make Mason the number 3, they’re basically doing away with him as they did Landry. 2019 was a head scratcher. Why wouldn’t they bring Jones back? The guy they got from Denver was terrible. Landry at least won games for them. Point is, their careers may be similar. If for no other reason than they never developed into something more.

Putting Mason in the game before Pickett is wrong in any situation and has nothing to do with what Ben was in his rookie season, and absolutely would never happen.

Rudolph will be #3 as he should be. End of story.

Turning the team over to Rudolph with that offensive line would be waving the white flag. The only way Rudolph seems to be effective is if he is given time. He does not move well in the pocket. He shows little awareness, and when he does see or feel the rush coming, he makes very poor decisions.

So who is your #3 if Mason is gone.

Replay the 2019 scenario... Mitch injures his arm in game 1, Picket is knocked out in say week 3. Who are you starting in week 4.

Mason: You traded have already traded away.
Chris Oladokun: On the Chiefs practice squad.
Haskins: Dead (Sorry to bring him in)
Duck: No idea where he is currently at?? But, at lease he would know the offense maybe?
Paxton Lynch: The last I heard he was getting cut by a Canadian team.
Gentry: I think he played QB in college?

Without Mason, and this offensive line you are 1 play away from asking "Who the hell is our backup QB?

Say what you want: Mason may have been treated like a red headed stepchild, but he did have a great camp and preseason this year.

Great is a bit much. He was the worst of the three quarterbacks. Sure, he put up numbers in the last two preseason games against what Tomlin correctly referred to as junior varsity. He also managed to make some ugly mistakes against those scrubs. He still lacks pocket presence. He still makes terrible decisions under pressure. He still misses too many open receivers.

Absolutely ... One big name QB will go out hurt in the first few weeks and his trade value will jump significantly. Landing a higher draft pick or a veteran olineman

Hoyer and Glennon are both available. Rudolph knowing the playbook isn’t enough of an advantage to make up for his limited skill set. Those guys probably wouldn’t sign on as a 3rd string QB but if both Pickett and Trubisky were injured, those guys would come play because they’d be starting.
