According to coach T he wasn't much concerned about
score/mistakes, he wanted to see people playing fast/hard.

Did you see ANY STEELERS PLAYING THIS WAY?

I was happy with the effort. Especially out of what regulars on defense that played. Looked fast and swarmed to the ball. Timmons is still a beast and shazier played hard. Dline looked strong. It's a junk game so u can't expect much. Archer did look good

I didn't watch much, but I was somewhat surprised to see Shazier in the game as long as he was. I mean, it's not like he's the most durable player on the team and he's playing at halftime and / or 3rd quarter? I thought he was projected as a possible starter? I mean right out of the gate we were just playing rookies and undrafted guys, but I know Shazier doesn't have much experience under his belt, just not sure the HOF game was the best venue to show off his skills.

He needs the practice. He has not seen much of the field for 2 years now lol

You could say the same about Boykin as well.. Yes he is new but really I don't think he is actually trying out for a first team spot.. He will most certainly be taking the field with the 1st teamers

Archer looked good? He made some small strides. Muffed punt didn't work on the positive side.

Was positive seeing Shazier making plays as well as Timmons. Shazier needs the reps. And we saw a glimps of what the inside linebackers will bring.
    Boykin will pay dividends.

I dont know why Archer is even on the field. Why do the coaches love him so much?

Exactly. Add Suisham to the list who got hurt for his effort.

I guess. If you didn't think those guys like Shazier were playing hard, and it's important to you, you should probably stop watching. They aren't going to play harder than that.

I think it is the change of pace concept that interests them. Patterned after the success of San Diego a few years ago with I forgot his name. Also Haley had success with this concept at KC.

But anyway, I agree that maybe Archer is not the answer here.

Of the new players #39 BW Webb surprised. He has been around a few years but had not made much noise. He made a couple of nice plays. If he keeps this up Friday maybe he makes the team.

Also I could not figure out what they want #40 Chickillo to do. He seemed to want to get involved.

    Some posters said:

    Boykin will pay dividends.

    All Yes!

Also Friday I would like to see J. James rebound and maybe get a clearer picture of the OLB situation.

Not saying this is the case with wardismvp at all, but I've noticed that the commentators utter disinterest in the game often shapes my perception of what's going on. There was one play where Landry Jones hit a big pass, but the commentators weren't calling it at all (I think there was an interview going on at the time). Watching the game with the sound down gives quite a different impression of the effort going on down there.

I have no problem whatsoever with the effort that I saw Sunday night. Certainly a bit too much effort on Suisham's part. Folks need to realize that we pretty much played deeper into our depth chart than Minnesota all night. We had a lot of 2's lining up against their 1's, 3's vs. 2's, etc. The first team defense was a little bit shaky early, but the guys gelled without giving up points before their departure. The long TD pass to the TE was a clear blown coverage, and is actually a gift for Butler as a teaching tool. It is unlikely to be repeated once the season starts.

There are certainly guys who don't belong, but for the most part it's because of talent and not effort. We'll have a solid, high-effort final 53.

" Patterned after the success of San Diego a few years ago with I forgot his name"

Huge Snack cleared this up in another thread. He said:" He'd have to go nearly full-Darren Sproles to be worth a 3rd, and that's not happening."

I am having trouble figuring out how to simply post a quick reply with just a blank box. Whatever happened to that? I did not want to post the entire quote. I simply hit reply and the entire post showed. [I erased it. It is confusing. Usually at the bottom of the page there is a Reply to Thread I now see it but did not at first. That should open a blank box I hope.[/QUOTE]

Interesting. It's true that announcers shape opinions all the time, especially for people who don't know what they're talking about. I remember Madden calling out James Harrison in SB 43 for being dirty, saying he should have been ejected for his "penalty" on Aaron Francisco in the 4th quarter. I think that shaped the public's opinion of the play. If Madden was being accurate, he'd have said, "Well, that's an unusual degree of ass-kicking Mr. Harrison is dishing out, and it definitely looks personal, but he didn't technically break a single rule - including the timing, which is worth noting since the referees erroneously said it occurred after the play."

But I was mostly thinking about comments they make. It hadn't occurred to me that their overall level of energy can affect the way fans view the energy of the players. You might be right.

I thought Shazier still looked bad in coverage and missed some tackles. I also thought AV looked good against their 2s and 3s.

It's the first of five preseason games who cares? Shazier, Timmons and Archer were playing fast.

Unusual for mere mortals, but more or less status quo for Mister Harrison.
