I don't understand how a team can be so stupid

Sloppiness is a lot more than penalities. Missing blocks, not making presnap adjustments to pick up the blitz, running the wrong route, not putting forth effort on blocks, not playing through to the whistle, not getting your feet in bounds on an easy sideline catch. To me these are all detail things that the players need to master to be the best at their craft. When one or more guys isn’t on point with these things it throws the whole unit off. I just feel from a preparation perspective we do not do a good job with this stuff as a team. There is no unity or continuity. More so on the offensive side of the ball.

I've read this before although it's never been backed up by any stats. I did find some actual stats though. Since 2009, teams are 1909-1588-12 with a win percentage of 0.546 when they are the least penalized team. That's a pretty big sample size and does seem to indicate that teams that commit more penalties tend to lose more.

We missed a huge layover up last Sunday. A thing like that can really knock a team off it's balance. Tonight we'll see how it our team handles it. Prediction : Toss up

Like I said, not a very good correlation with wins and losses.

And a .546 winning % translates to 9-7. If penalties were in any way determinative of wins and losses you'd think the average record for the least penalized team each year since 2009 would be better than 9-7.

Probably no stats for stupid penalties, and unlikely even those are correlated with wins and losses, but they probably reflect something about team discipline and team IQ, and are certainly correlated with fan frustration.
