Just hired as a Wide receiever coach for the Jets.
Dont understand if he was interested in coaching why the steelers didnt get him on the team.

He worked as a coaching intern with the Steelers, no? So I’m guessing the opportunity to hire him was there if they felt it was warranted.

We have a very young receiver group. I'm not sure we'd want an inexperienced receiver's coach with this group.

Wasn't he interning or an assistant with the Eagles during camp and preseason? Take the work you can get

It didn't work out too well with Porter and Lake, pass on Ward being the Steelers WR coach.

I don't see the connection, outside of superstition or something.

Former great players isn't always the best choice to bring back as coaches, plus Ward was inexperienced at coaching .

Agreed. Being great at what you do does not always translate to effective coaching. I know from experience. Was a good ball player but not a great coach.

Yup there are ton of trainers/coaches that are great at what they do, some never have played or performed.

Joe Greene was our D Line coach for a short spell. He was let go. Great players rarely make good coaches (there are exceptions).

I will be fair and agree that Ward was an unofficial player/coach his last few seasons. He should be given partial credit for the "young money" crew's developments. He also lacked the natural talent

Oops. He also lacked the natural talent to excell as he did. His talent made him a good player. His work ethic and drive is what made him a great player. Those traits can transfer over to coaching. I think he's the wrong fit for us this year but he might make it as a coach.

I can think of great players who were/are great coaches.
I don't know if Hines would be a good coach or not, but I wouldn't exclude him based on Porter and Lake's results. (and the secondary didn't look a whole lot better without Lake.)

Hines worked with JuJu his rookie year:hmm:.

Still Hines is inexperienced, he was working as a coaching intern I believe.

Just because porter and lakes sucked as coaches .... doesn't mean Hines would bomb. I would've gave him maybe an asst wr coach position. Look, Ward was a coach on the field and sideline. The steelers just chose the wrong ex players to hold onto. They need to get rid of big O and the middle linebackers would play better.

I was thinking those who become great without natural talent must have great technique of some sort. This is something that should be able to be passed on to others. On the other hand, those who were great due to natural ability would seem to be less likely to have something to pass on to others. Ward should have potential to be a great coach.

The NBA is living proof of that statement, so many great players who are unable to translate what they did to coaching others. Scary how bad some of them were as coaches

that's because for guys like Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas, the game was easy for them. they never had to learn the why or the how, they were just naturally able to do things.

Some of us are misinterpreting what Hines Ward's endgame plan is. He is not going to be a long time Offensive Assistant in the NFL. His main plan is to return to the University of Georgia, his Alma Mater, and become a coach there.

Coaching in the NFL benefits the short term. Nothing more. Pittsburgh needs their coaches for the long haul. It is possible that they did not hire him due to that.
